Happy Juneteenth! Today we celebrate freedom, unity, and resilience. On this day in 1865, Major General Gordon Granger and almost 2,000 Union troops arrived in Texas, the westernmost Confederate state, to inform over 250,000 enslaved people that slavery had been abolished. Let's honor the traditions of Juneteenth with music, food, and community.
We stand together in solidarity as we continue to work towards a more just and equitable future for all. To learn more about the history of Juneteenth, visit https://nmaahc.si.edu/explore/stories/historical-legacy-juneteenth from Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture
