Beegie Adair

I just learned that Beegie's longest living friend from her home town in Cave City passed away recently. I wanted to share something nice about Lynn because Beegie loved her so much and I understand that she didn't really have family that spent much time with her. Lynn and Beegie were friends since childhood and remained close until Beegie's passing. I stayed in touch with her occasionally, mostly because I just thought it was something Beegie would like for me to do. I also knew it was meaningful to Lynn to have the company and to continue to share stories about a friend she missed so dearly.

Lynn and Beegie were opposites in many ways. Politically, socially and professionally they couldn't have been more different. But, they had a childhood bond that made those things irrelevant. They could go months without speaking and pick up where they left off, not remembering their differences but reminiscing about cherished memories and spending hours understanding where they were in their lives so that they could support one another. Lynn gave the best gifts, almost always something vintage that reminded her of their childhood. I learned so much about Beegie through their stories and from Lynn sharing them with me. I'm forever grateful for that.

I suppose this hurts a little more because, selfishly, I feel like I lost another part of Beegie. But, I know she was overjoyed to see her again and to start bickering at her about her politics. 🥲

Sleep well, Lynn. You'll be missed. ❤️

My first student recital performance at Nashville Jazz Workshop in 2004. I had a whole other musical life prior to this, but this is when I really started to learn the Great American Songbook and jazz. I'm really looking forward to returning to NJW this Saturday. Beegie loved many different kinds of music. She didn't discriminate, so long as it was good. She also loved collaborating with musicians of different genres. I keep thinking she'd love this photo, but hell, she could've been in the room when it was taken! 😂 Chances are she wasn't, but it wouldn't have surprised me. Regardless, it is a wonderful shapshot of great musicianship and clear, mutual respect.

Beegie loved working with Hank. She played organ on MANCINI COUNTRY and did several live shows with him in the 60s and 70s. She remembered him for his graciousness to musicians (even reprimanding an audience once for not being more respectful while they were playing) and very charming.

Like all great music, his lives on forever.
