By the time children turn 8 months old, and sometimes even earlier, they begin to understand that their favorite people, toys, and objects still exist, even if they can’t see them. This is called object permanence. This crucial milestone explains why “disappearing” games excite infants. And why they miss their caregivers when trusted adults leave the room—they understand that they aren’t gone for good. Babies start working toward object permanence when they take their first breath.
