HOW WOULD JOHN BONHAM SOUND TODAY? (Quantized) 11/27/2023

Being able to play accurately with a click is very important. But it’s completely natural to have a little bit of push and pull within a drum track. If you take that away, you lose the human element and at that point you might as well just have a drum machine. It’s that human element that gives music personality and magic. It’s the human element that gives music feel. And that applies all the way from the heaviest metal to the most slinky funk.

HOW WOULD JOHN BONHAM SOUND TODAY? (Quantized) So how would John Bonham sound if Led Zeppelin came out in 2019? Would the Led Zeppelin sound be processed and quantized like all of the other contemporary r...

As a drummer that loves metal I've never wanted to rely on triggers for my kick. Not that I think triggers are "cheating" per se. But I've never wanted to rely on an electronic sample for my bass drum playing to sound good. And the reality is with certain techniques they're only going to sound consistent if you're triggering your bass drum (specifically any type of heel toe playing). It's true that with those types of techniques you can go way faster with about half the effort. But if you take away the trigger you're only going to really hear half the notes (or it's just going to sound like inconsistent dynamics coming in and out). So because of this it's always been hard for me to justify putting in all the effort to get a technique to an extremely high level that is only going to be effective if I use a trigger. So my philosophy is it's better to play at a slower tempo with a technique that can truly be picked up by a basic microphone, or just acoustically even without a mic, than to be able to play a million miles an hour with a technique that is dependent on technology to sound good. All that said, hearing those bass drum hits at a million miles an hour definitely sounds pretty cool at times, even though they are dependent upon a trigger. But when I see somebody playing the same thing without the triggers and I can only hear half the notes that kind of makes me cringe! 😁
