Pregnancy Center Sues AG Bonta to Protect Abortion Pill Reversal - California Family Council 07/08/2024

Pregnancy Center Sues AG Rob Bonta in order to Protect Abortion Pill Reversal

In a move that underscores the ongoing battle for life in California, Culture of Life Family Services (COLFS), a nonprofit community health clinic in San Diego, has filed a federal lawsuit against California Attorney General Rob Bonta. The lawsuit, spearheaded by the Thomas More Society, challenges Bonta’s unconstitutional attempts to silence pro-life speech and shut down Abortion Pill Reversal (APR) services. This legal battle not only highlights the pro-life community’s commitment to defending life but also underscores the broader fight for religious liberty and free speech in California.

The Legal Battle:

The conflict began in September 2023 when AG Bonta filed a lawsuit against Heartbeat International and RealOptions Obria Medical Clinics, a key provider of APR services, attempting to halt its life-saving efforts. The State of California’s complaint alleges that pregnancy care centers are sharing “false or misleading statements,” as well as engaging in “unlawful, unfair, and fraudulent business practices,” for providing information about and access to Abortion Pill Reversal to pregnant women in need. Bonta is seeking a permanent injunction against HBI and RealOptions, to prevent them from sharing their science-based, life-affirming message about the benefits, success, effectiveness, and safety of Abortion Pill Reversal.

APR is a medical protocol that offers women a second chance to choose life after initiating a chemical abortion—a choice that has proven successful for many. Despite this, Bonta’s lawsuit seeks to strip away this option from women as part of a broader agenda to suppress the work of pregnancy care centers in California.

Now, COLFS, supported by the Thomas More Society, is taking a stand. On July 30, 2024, they filed a lawsuit in the United States District Court for the Southern District of California, seeking declaratory and injunctive relief. Their aim? To ensure that providing APR services remains constitutionally protected, safeguarding the rights of women who choose life over abortion.

“Attorney General Rob Bonta refuses to recognize a woman’s right to reverse an abortion in progress when she has changed her mind about the procedure,” said Peter Breen, Thomas More Society Executive Vice President & Head of Litigation. “Abortion Pill Reversal gives these women a second chance to choose life, a choice that Bonta and the abortion industry would strip from her. In his quest to silence pregnancy help ministries, Bonta is violating Culture of Life Family Services’ right to speak and aid women in exercising their reproductive privacy rights.”

One Month Left: Legislature Returns to Decide on Good and Bad Bills

The legislature returns to finish making decisions about the remaining bills that haven’t been killed or abandoned during this year’s legislative process. If a bill is going to survive, it needs to get the approval of both houses of the state legislature, the Assembly and the Senate, by the end of August. Then Governor Newsom will make the final decision by the September 30th.

The following is a compilation of bills the California Family Council views as either supporting or conflicting with Biblical values.

Now is the time to share your thoughts on these bills with your legislators, motivated by your love for your neighbor and your determination to be salt and light in a culture straying from its Creator.

Parents Outraged School District Forces Children to Room With Trans Students on Overnight Trips

Students in a Southern California school district could be forced to choose between rooming with a transgender-identifying student or missing out on an overnight school field trip.

If parents complain about their child rooming with a transgender-identifying student of the opposite biological s*x, staff in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District listen to the parents’ concerns, then say that the child’s rooming assignment isn’t the parents’ choice, according to emails from 2021 and 2022 obtained by the Center for American Liberty and shared with The Daily Signal.

The only option for students who are uncomfortable staying in a room with transgender students is to opt out of the trip, Sarah Coley, the school district’s administrative director, said in an email to school district employees regarding a sixth-grade science trip.

CBS News Bay Area interviews CFC Vice President Greg Burt about and the Parent Notification Policies.

While they question if parent notification policies are hateful and dangerous, Burt sets the record straight!

California Family Council reacts to gender notification ban 31/07/2024

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtNpdxshcog
Greg Burt here, VP of the California Family Council. I had the opportunity to do a live interview on CBS Bay Area News last week regarding a new law that prevents schools from having a parent notification policy when kids ask to be called a different name and gender at school. It was a bit nerve-racking and the hardest type of interview for me. If you fumble with your words, you just have to keep going.

This really is a terrible law. Your public school is no longer your ally, Christian parents.

Here is the transcript of part of the interview:

Host: Well, joining me now is Greg Burt. He is the Vice President of California Family Council. Greg, thanks for being with us today.

Greg Burt: Thanks for having me.

Host: Your organization has a lot of concerns about this new law, so let's break some of them down. First, you say that it's actually dangerous for children. How so?

Greg Burt: Well, children need their parents. I mean, children are very trusting. They're easily manipulated by adults, and they need their parents to protect them. And so the question is, how can parents actually protect their kids if the schools are keeping secrets about something as important as gender identity? Changing your gender identity is a big deal, and children need their parents. They need their oversight. Parents are legally and ethically responsible for caring for and overseeing the raising of their kids, and that responsibility doesn't belong to the teacher, an administrator, or even a politician.

Host: Is "dangerous" the right word, though, when we're talking about a child using a name or a pronoun? What is really the harm in that?

Greg Burt: Well, the danger is this particular bill that was passed allows teachers to lie. It actually lets them deceive parents about the gender identity of their kids. And you would think most parents would be really concerned if an adult told their own child whether they should keep secrets or not from their parents. I mean, you wouldn't want that adult around your child. And so it's a terrible precedent for the schools to encourage teachers and students to keep secrets from their own parents. We should be encouraging kids to talk to their parents about the things they're going through. Keeping secrets only breaks down relationships and causes distrust.

Host: Okay, I think we can agree that all parents are not equal in this society. You know, we have some that would explore this with the child and others that would be, frankly, angry or hateful toward them. So, do you agree that there could be negative consequences for a child in some families if this were to be revealed?

Greg Burt: Yeah, listen, we know that not all parents are perfect, right? And these are really sensitive issues. But the solution is to encourage parents to have good conversations with their kids and encourage kids to have those important conversations with their parents. This is a policy that puts the state in the position of making kids distrust their parents. Everybody is now suspect; all parents are suspect. That's a terrible thing to tell kids. That's a terrible thing to tell teachers. We have teachers who don't want to be in the position of lying to parents and deceiving them, and that's what they're being forced to do. They've got multiple kids, and they have to keep track of what pronouns to use at school. Then, when they talk to their Parents, they have to go around and use the original pronouns and the original names. Teachers don't want to have to do that.

Host: Now, what about the cases of some families where, I mean, you could agree, I'm sure, that it would be dangerous for some kids to have their parents knowing this kind of information about them?

Greg Burt: Well, if there are any parents who would harm, kick their kid out of their home, or abuse them because of this, we have a system already in place—CPS. That's abuse, and it should be illegal. That's neglect. And so we already have a system. But what's happening is they're now saying the government is saying that parents who simply believe that biology determines gender are harmful to their own kids. But the majority of parents are still telling their little kids when they're young what their gender is because they believe that biology determines gender. Those parents aren't endangering their kids. What this law is really doing is saying if you have traditional beliefs about gender and s*xuality, you're a danger to your own kids. And because of that, the schools are now going to keep secrets about your own children in your own schools. That violates the Constitution.

Teen’s Su***de Attempt Reveals Perils of CA’s Gender Secrecy Policies - California Family Council 29/07/2024

Teen’s Su***de Attempt Reveals Perils of CA’s Gender Secrecy Policies

A deeply disturbing case of a teenage girl being socially transitioned to a male identity by her Fresno County school without her parents’ knowledge has come to light in a federal lawsuit challenging gender secrecy policies within the state’s public schools. The family’s heartbreaking journey began when their 14-year-old daughter, identified as Poe in the lawsuit, attempted su***de, leading to a shocking revelation by medical professionals. (The real names of the minors and their parents were not publicly made available in the lawsuit)

The parents, devout Catholics who chose their Fresno County home for its high-quality public schools, had no idea that their daughter had been identifying as transgender at school. She had requested teachers to use a male name and pronouns and even became president of the school’s LGBT club, PRISM, all without her parents’ knowledge.

The parents only learned of their daughter’s new identity when she attempted su***de last year, and was admitted to Fremont Hospital in the Bay Area, with its inpatient psychiatric program for adolescents. It was only then that a hospital doctor informed them that their daughter was identifying as a boy. Upon her return home, Poe revealed that her teachers had been using her preferred name and pronouns since the seventh grade.

“Upon learning about this, my husband and I contacted the school to ask if they were calling our daughter by a different name or using different pronouns. The school said, ‘no,’” the mother stated in the lawsuit. “However, we have learned that this was a lie, as handwritten letters and emails from teachers to our daughter indicated otherwise.”

The parents then enrolled Poe in an online homeschooling program and later a public charter school, because their daughter wanted in-person teaching at a traditional school.

CA School District and Christian Parents Sue Governor Newsom Over Secrecy Bill - California Family Council 24/07/2024

CA School District and Christian Parents Sue Governor Newsom Over Secrecy Bill

In a battle to protect parental rights, the Chino Valley Unified School District and eight Christian parents have filed a lawsuit against Governor Gavin Newsom, Attorney General Robert Bonta, and State Superintendent Tony Thurmond. The lawsuit, initiated by the Liberty Justice Center, challenges AB 1955, recently signed into law by Governor Newsom.

AB 1955, proposed by State Superintendent Thurmond, authored by Assemblyman Chris Ward (D-San Diego), and backed by the California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus, prohibits parental notification policies. Specifically, it bans schools from informing parents if their children request to be referred to by different names or pronouns or seek to access s*x-segregated facilities inconsistent with their birth gender. The bill mandates that such information be kept secret from parents.

The plaintiffs argue that AB 1955 infringes on the constitutional rights of parents to know and make decisions about their children’s welfare. Emily Rae, Senior Counsel at the Liberty Justice Center, stated, “Parents are the legal guardians of their children, not Governor Newsom or school officials. This bill enables children to make potentially life-altering decisions without their parents’ knowledge, which could have devastating consequences.”

The lawsuit, filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California, seeks an injunction to prevent the law from being enforced, emphasizing the fundamental rights of parents to be informed about significant aspects of their children’s lives.

“We fully support the Chino Valley Unified School District and the brave parents standing up against AB 1955. This lawsuit is a crucial step in ensuring that parents retain their God-given rights to direct and oversee the upbringing of their children,” said California Family Council President Greg Burt. “We are confident that the courts will recognize that the state has no authority to assume parents’ beliefs and values are dangerous to their own children. Protecting the rights of parents is essential to safeguarding the well-being and future of our families.”

California March for Life 2024!

“CA Will Be Saved” Brings Hope to San Francisco - California Family Council 17/07/2024

“CA Will Be Saved” Brings Hope to San Francisco"

San Francisco’s Civic Center Plaza was transformed into a beacon of hope and faith as hundreds of Christians gathered for the “San Francisco Will Be Saved” event hosted by CA Will Be Saved. Held on July 6th, 2024, this powerful assembly aimed to bring the light of Jesus to the city, offering a compelling counter-narrative to the recent SF Pride Festival.

The event began with a Jesus March from United Nations Plaza, culminating in the main event at Civic Center Plaza. The streets echoed with worship and prayer, as believers united to spread a message of hope and true freedom.

During the Jesus March, Christians joyfully proclaimed “JESUS LOVES,” “JESUS SAVES,” and “SAN FRANCISCO WILL BE SAVED” as they marched through the Tenderloin District. The atmosphere was electric with joy and worship, drawing in the homeless, locals peering from their homes, and even a truck driver who rolled down his window to show his Bible to the marchers

Joel Mott, Co-Founder of CA Will Be Saved, voiced his strong disapproval of the recent SF Pride Festival, calling for a stand against what he termed “defilement and wickedness.” He emphasized the need for a better narrative for the city, driven by the Gospel’s transformative power. “This is not about ‘inclusivity’ and ‘love is love.’ This is absolutely evil and a telling manifestation of an agenda driven by a spirit of perversion and rebellion. It’s time to gather. The world needs to see a better story play out for this city!” Mott declared.

Coalition for Latino Pastors Testifies Against Abortion Bill - California Family Council 16/07/2024

Coalition for Latino Pastors Testifies Against Abortion Bill

A newly formed coalition of Latino pastors sent representatives to the capitol last week to stand up for the unborn and against Planned Parenthood’s plans to put abortion clinics in their communities. They came specifically to testify against Assembly Bill 2085, a proposed bill that mandates cities approve abortion clinics, effectively stripping local communities of the right to reject such establishments. They had never testified in a legislative committee before, but the California Family Council held their hands and showed them the ropes.

A Call to Action
The Coalición de Pastores Latinos was deeply troubled by the implications of AB 2085. This bill, they argued, not only undermines local autonomy but also misleads women, especially Latinas, into thinking that Planned Parenthood, with its focus on abortion, is the best option for their health care. As they prepared to voice their concerns, the pastors knew they were up against a significant challenge, but their commitment to defending life and their devotion to the Lord fueled their determination.

The Scene at the Capitol
The hearing room buzzed with anticipation. Proponents of the bill, including representatives from Planned Parenthood and various advocacy groups, had already spoken passionately about the necessity of the legislation. They emphasized the need for accessible healthcare, including abortion services, especially in underserved areas. Molly Robson, Vice President of Government Affairs at Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California, highlighted the struggles faced by their clinics in hostile environments, recounting specific instances where local governments had obstructed their efforts through regulatory hurdles.

Newsom Signs Parental Secrecy Bill, Endangering Child Safety

The California Family Council (CFC) vehemently condemns Governor Gavin Newsom’s decision to sign AB 1955, a bill that creates a government-imposed wall of secrecy between parents and their children. This legislation, passed by the California Legislature and now signed into law, allows schools to withhold critical information from parents about their children’s health and welfare. The bill specifically prohibits school districts from enacting policies requiring parents to be notified if their child has asked everyone at school to use a different name and pronoun.

Jonathan Keller, President of the California Family Council, issued the following statement:

“Governor Newsom’s signing of AB 1955 is a direct assault on the safety of children and the rights of their parents. By allowing schools to withhold vital information from mothers and fathers, this bill undermines their fundamental role and places boys and girls in potential jeopardy. Moms and dads have both a constitutional and divine mandate to guide and protect their kids, and AB 1955 egregiously violates this sacred trust.”

AB 1955 Attacks Parental Rights:
Parental rights have been under attack by the California Legislature, which prompted Assemblyman Essayli to author AB 1314 to ensure parents are aware if their child requests to change their gender on official school records. It is dangerous and defies common sense to keep secrets from parents, especially regarding such an important subject. Legislative Democrats refused to hear AB 1314, and Attorney General Bonta responded by suing school districts across the state to keep secrets from parents. AB 1955 codifies the authority of the government to keep secrets from parents.
