Grow up...but never be a grownup.

Tap Dancing on the Mirror As a child my creativity manifested itself in the ability to see the extraordinary in ordinary objects. I continually see things around the house and in thrift stores and out in nature--that are still telling me the secrets of who they really are.

My husband and I were enjoying an extremely rare moment of relaxation and companionship over Chinese yesterday. We were celebrating my grand opening and I had made up my mind I was not going to work for the next 3 days while he was off. We instituted our own “Friday Night Date Night” very early in our marriage, it was something my parents did for as long as I could remember...After weeks of working hard lately, it was nice to pick it back up.

So I have a thing about fortune cookies. You kind of weigh them in your hand and see which one you think is yours, and then it tells you something that seems to be written just for you LOL and last night mine was, “Don’t worry about the stock market, invest in families.” It hit me dead between the eyes...

I know this isn't strictly information, and that I am a relationship coach, but: #1. I do have a medical background #2. I have worked in hospitals and #3. I am a mother of three boys who have had either asthma, PPHN*, or allergies that require them to carry an EpiPen.

Back in 2006 when I had small children at home, the EPSES*/NHAMCS*, self reporting questionnaires, showed that only 5.5% of hospitals had the full complement of recommended pediatric equipment. I'm happy to say it's getting a whole lot better!

By 2023, as part of a quality improvement initiative, the National Pediatric Readiness Project went around assessing and equipping emergency departments and found significant improvement. Just over half of the ER's had ALL of the equipment recommended by the AAP*, ACEP*, and EMSC*. Hopefully it's even better in 2024, because there's definitely room for improvement!

(But it's still a good idea to call your local hospital and talk to them about their pediatric services and equipment in their emergency room.)

So from one parent to another, knowledge is power.

And remember... I'm rooting for you - and your children!

Today is National Talk Like Yoda Day! Hence the theme of this week's In case you haven't already guessed, my father did an awesome job of fostering my creativity! He himself was an educator, and he went out of his way for me to receive art education. I was a bit of a tomboy, and I never saw an oversized box I did not see as a spaceship or an airplane or a race car.

So here are some ways to foster creativity in your *own* children:

Provide Diverse Materials:
Offer a variety of materials such as paper, crayons, clay, and recycled objects to inspire creativity and allow children to explore different textures and tools. (We certainly have plenty of those at Your Transformation Teacher! Now that we are set up in our we have a huge mail counter full of drawers of art supplies!)

Encourage Free Play:
Allow children unstructured time to engage in creative play without strict guidelines or expectations. This fosters independence and self-directed learning. (That is why we only offer guided open studio for kids instead of classes--we let your child take the lead! Additionally, we just opened our new location at 600 Broad Street and have a huge pile of boxes for kids who also see those spaceships and airplanes 😉)

Join in the Fun:
Participate in creative activities with your children to strengthen your bond and model positive behaviors. Let them know you support their creative choices. (Above all, Your Transformation Teacher is a relationship coaching service! So instead of becoming licensed for child care because we love children, we provide an environment for you to spend time WITH your child. After all, as their parent or primary caregiver, you are the one they most want to show off their skills to!)

Okay, I know I'm not the only one who struggles with getting enough exercise. It's hard to find the time, I'm pretty out of shape, and to be quite honest - I just don't feel like it. But walking is the one of the simplest forms of exercise, and it has many health benefits:

Joint Health and Flexibility:
Walking is a low-impact exercise that helps keep your joints flexible and reduces stiffness. It strengthens your muscles around the joints for stability too.

Pain Reduction:
Walking can help reduce your pain by improving joint lubrication and reducing inflammation. It also releases endorphins, which are natural painkillers.

Weight Management:
Walking is a simple way to burn calories and can aid in your weight loss efforts. Losing weight alleviates pressure on your joints.

Improved Mobility and Function:
Walking enhances range of motion and flexibility, which can improve overall function and your quality of life. The more flexible you are, the less likely you are to be injured.

Mental Health Benefits:
Walking can improve your mood and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. The act of walking, especially in nature, can be a mindful activity that reduces stress.

So start small! This week's challenge is for you to *not* drive around the parking lot scouting for the space closest to the door. Park all the way at the back of the lot, and walk. It may not seem like much, but it's a great habit to get in. Small successes tend to beget even more successes. And remember... I'm rooting for you! --Roseanne Dabbs

that in our country we typically pay people 36.5% more to walk our dogs than we pay teachers to shape the lives of our children?

Teachers often need a bachelor’s degree as a minimum requirement, and many pursue advanced degrees to improve their skills or meet certification requirements. The cost of these degrees varies:

Bachelor’s Degree: Typically ranges from $25,000 to over $100,000, depending on the institution

Master’s Degree: Can cost between $12,000 and $74,000

Certification Programs: Online teaching certificate programs can range from $10,000 to $30,000

Yet the the Economic Policy Institute reports that teachers earn about 76.5 cents on the dollar compared to other college graduates.
Additionally, teachers frequently spend out of pocket on classroom supplies and continuing education, which are not always fully reimbursed by school districts.

So if you're wondering what to get your child's teacher as an end-of-the-year gift, skip the 🍎 apple--next year when they give you a supply list as long as your arm, don't complain. And if it is within your means, double it! Because according to a report by the Kids in Need Foundation, approximately 1 in 5 children in the United States who live below the federally defined poverty line do not have money for school supplies. And you know who often dips into their own pay to get those desperately needed supplies? Your child's teacher.

And remember... I'm rooting for our Educators because I'm rooting for our future--your children! --Roseanne Dabbs

It's and I would like to take this opportunity to talk about self-care. I cannot tell you how excited I am to meet all of you, and I am preparing a really special summer. But I was supposed to be at Blackstone Pub & Eatery for First Friday's Chalk Garden at 525 Broad Street and I almost had a disaster. First let me say that Sydney, the manager there, is truly a good-hearted person. I put up banners and wrote directions all over the place in chalk for people to find their way to the courtyard, and when she heard what was happening she told me that of course I should just go home. I felt awful, and I ended up leaving without even taking down the signs. My husband came back and got them later. The reason that happened is because I am diabetic (I had gestational diabetes for the first time 30 years ago so it was only a matter of time), I hadn't eaten all day because I was so busy at Your Transformation Teacher, and I was very dehydrated with a fever. What I want you to know is, that no matter how important what you are doing is to you, you won't be able to do it if you don't take care of yourself. If you are worried about letting people down, the surest way to make it happen is to not do self-care. Whether that is eating properly, getting enough rest, setting aside time to be creative--just make it happen. I hope you are rooting for me. --Roseanne Dabbs

This week's challenge is going out a little late. But there's never a better time to make a change than this very moment. We all experience times in our lives when we feel like a fish out of water. Sometimes that feeling lets us know we are not in the right place for us; sometimes it tells us we are having problems setting boundaries. But quite often what that feeling tells us is that we are being challenged to grow. Is your partner a social butterfly and you are more of an introvert? Challenge yourself to take them somewhere they are in their element and bask in their excitement. Does your child seek affection from you, but you didn't grow up that way? Overcome the urge to hold them at arm's length and give them the hug that speaks love to them. A comfort zone is a beautiful place... but nothing ever grows there. Grow your love for someone this week by doing something uncomfortable. It WILL make you a better you. And remember, I'm rooting for you! --Roseanne Dabbs

Knowing if your toddler is eating enough can be a concern for many parents, especially given the picky eating phases common in toddlers. Here are several guidelines and signs to help you assess if your toddler is getting enough nutrition:

1. Growth and Development
Well-child visits help you track your toddler's growth and development. A consistent growth pattern is a good indicator that they are eating enough.
2. Energy Levels
A toddler who is eating enough has a good energy level. If your child is active, playful, and engaged, it's likely they are receiving the nutrition they need.
3. Eating Habits
Toddlers typically eat 3 meals and 2-3 snacks per day. They may eat more on some days and less on others. If your toddler is participating in meals and showing interest in food, they are likely eating enough.
4. Hunger and Fullness Cues
Pay attention to your toddler's hunger and fullness cues. Toddlers are usually good at regulating their food intake based on their body's needs. If they are refusing food, they might not be hungry.
5. Portion Sizes
Understand appropriate portion sizes for toddlers. For example, a serving size for a toddler might be ¼ cup of cooked vegetables or ¼ of a medium apple. Offering small, manageable portions can help ensure they are not overwhelmed.
6. Dietary Variety
Ensure a variety of foods are being offered because toddlers need a balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, grains, protein, and dairy. Sometimes you may need to reintroduce a new food they have rejected in the past because their preferences are always changing.

Remember, every toddler is different, and appetites can vary widely. Maintaining a positive, stress-free eating environment and offering a variety of nutritious foods without pressuring them to eat more than they wish is key to healthy eating habits. Feeding a toddler can certainly be a challenge, but all of these tips can help. And remember... I'm rooting for you! --Roseanne Dabbs

Why is it so hard sometimes to be ourselves? Being authentic means taking risks. The risk we might offend someone (someone is always offended about something!), the risk that we may make someone angry or lose them--the risk of being rejected. But try as we may, we can't ever really be anyone but ourselves. In trying to conform to what will please other people, we only reveal our insecurities--and people are usually responding to our insecurities, not us. In effect, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. So be you and be confident about it! You really don't want to be surrounded by people who are attracted to the fake you so you always have to be on your toes. You want to be surrounded by people who are attracted to the *real* you so you can relax, be natural, and enjoy life. And remember... I'm rooting for you! -Roseanne Dabbs

We teach our children not to talk to strangers, but who is the first person they have to talk to if they are separated from you in public? Gavin de Becker is an author, security specialist, and expert on the prediction and management of violence, whose book "The Gift of Fear" was featured on Oprah's book of the month club. We are going to learn to teach our kids *how* to talk to strangers in an emergency, and how fear can actually become a gift that tells us when we need to be aware of danger rather than simply a source of anxiety. Join us this summer as we read and discuss "Protecting the Gift" to learn how to keep our children safe. We will be having a special guest speaker every other week after the discussion to help us develop the mindset we need to effectively protect our families and ourselves. Stay tuned, the Summer of Successes Series starts June 1st.

It's not surprising that 20 million American women every year struggle with eating disorders. The average woman will be on 126 different diets in her lifetime! Forty percent of American women are being told that they are obese according to their BMI. But your BMI is a simple mathematical formula that takes into account height and weight. It does not take into account bone density. It does not take into account body type. And it does not take into account frame size. So what does that really tell you? It tells you that you may need further advice. If you are concerned about your health, talk to your provider about your body fat percentage and distribution, and get yourself an appointment with a nutritionist to discuss your diet.

But for so many women, it's not about health, it's about their mindset when they look in the mirror. And the percentage of women who stand in front of their mirror unhappy isn't statistically any different at 17 than it is at 70. At Your Transformation Teacher, we are BIG on mindset, and this summer we are going to offer a therapeutic art series called "Alternative Fashion, Alternative Mindset". We will learn to repurpose clothing, we will use fabric paint and sewing needles, we will make patterns and dressforms, and our relationship coach will be coaching you to have a different relationship with your body. Don't be intimidated, you will not need a sewing machine for your projects in this mindset class for fashion creativity. Stay tuned, our Summer of Successes Series in the new Metamorphic Mailroom starts June 1st.

Awwww, man! Early?! YES!! I know you're tired, but what does that extra snooze get you? Does that 10 extra minutes leave you refreshed? No, it leaves you rushed! You're starting your day off running behind, you're impatient getting your kids out the door, you're rushing for the time clock. Fifteen to twenty percent of people are late to work and appointments, most often by 10 minutes! Like 35% Americans, you are probably sleep deprived, and you've scooted your schedule forward inch by inch to make up for it. So get back on track, and while you're at it--try going to bed 10 minutes earlier too!

And remember, I'm rooting for you! -Roseanne Dabbs

It is and I would like to say something about diets. No matter what you eat someone is going to tell you it is bad for you. Sometimes people can lose weight by cutting out an entire food group and it cuts down on their calories that half the normal ingredients for that meal are missing! But chances are it's going to come right back on. If you want to make a lasting change for the sake of your health, develop a healthy relationship with food. My sister is a nutritionist by profession, and a lot of what she has said over the years fell on deaf ears while I tapped my foot impatiently thinking of fast food LOL But she said something to me recently that really made an impression. We were talking about nutrition, and healthy foods and meals, and she stopped and said, "Well, you know all this. You're just going to have to decide how you want to live and eat accordingly." It was a major epiphany for me! How do I want to live? Gadsden has some stunning scenery--the Coosa river, walking trails, a bustling historic district, beautiful waterfalls, hills and vales. Do I want to be able to walk around and see it all? Do I want to be easy to injure? Do I want to be out of breath and unable to keep up with the kids? I no longer open the refrigerator 16 times to see what's inside like something new might appear LOL And when I walk through the grocery store or peruse menu, I know I'm not looking for what I want to eat, I'm looking for how I want to live. And that is definitely a mindset for transformation!

Do you sometimes think your teen would rather be anywhere than with you? Do you think they believe friends are more important than family? Well think again. Your teenager is THREE TIMES MORE LIKELY than you to think that you don't spend enough time together! It can be challenging sometimes--you really love your child, but your time with them is not always fun. You think, "They'd rather be with their friends anyway", and you can think of a million things you need to do. But next to school worries, your child is more concerned about the lack of time you spend together than anything else. So the next time you tell your teenager they cannot go out with their friends because it's family time, and they roll their eyes at you, stay firm. However, think about whether or not it is enjoyable to spend time with your teenager... Maybe you need to work on your relationship, because if it's not enjoyable for you, chances are it's not enjoyable for them. I'm here if you need me! A 15-minute consultation is always free, and remember: I'm rooting for you! --Roseanne Dabbs
