October 29th, 1948:

A historic smog event occurred in the town of Donora, Pennsylvania. The smog killed 20 people and sickened 7,000 more. The image, taken at noon on October 29th, shows the deadly smog blanketing Donora. The image is from the NOAA Ocean Service Education.

** FIRST SNOW(FLAKES) OF THE SEASON (FOR SOME) **

❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️Our coldest airmass of the season yet has entered the region, allowing for the risk of the first flakes of snow to fall across the Commonwealth. As our deep upper-level trough settles in, small pieces of energy will ridge around the trough, sparking new areas of precipitation and turning on the lake effect machine. With plenty of cold air aloft, there will be, at times, wet snowflakes and snow pellets (graupel) mixing in primarily across northern Pennsylvania and through the Laurel Highlands. No accumulation is generally expected, however, those in the 'quick coating' regions may see a quick coating (less than a half inch) in heavier bouts of precipitation, especially tonight and into early Wednesday morning. No issues are expected as the ground is rather warm to support anything more than a coating in those regions. For others, as I said, only expect wet flakes and/or graupel (snow pellets). For those in the gray regions, expect generally cold rain showers although a wet flake or snow pellet can fall through in some very isolated regions. ❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️

Another hurricane will impact Florida this week. Hurricane Milton will likely be a major hurricane.
