Yesterday, DNP student Kevin Cho Tipton hosted U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy during the planting of a mango tree in a Miami-area community garden. Tipton organized the tree planting in recognition of Murthy and his family for their health care contributions to the area. Faculty members Drs. Congratulations to faculty member, Dr. Staja Booker, who will be inducted as an American Academy of Nursing Class of 2024 Fellow. The inductees will be recognized for their substantial, sustained and outstanding impact on health and health care at the Academy’s annual Health Policy Conference, taking place on Oct. 31-Nov. 2 in Washington, DC. This year’s conference theme is “Courageous Transformations Towards an Equitable Future.”

The Gator Nursing community mourns the loss of Ann Lurie (BSN ‘67) who passed away on June 24 in Chicago. Lurie was a global philanthropist, renowned for her contributions to health care and education all around the world, carrying forward the college’s motto to Care, Lead and Inspire. Lurie was widely recognized, and in 2015, she was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2009, she was named the College of Nursing’s Alumna of the Year and received an Honorary Doctor of Public Service degree from UF.

What a day! The Gainesville Accelerated BSN class of 2025 received their White Coats during a ceremony on Thursday. Students, faculty, family and friends came together to share in this traditional step in a professional nurses career.

On Friday, the UF Health Jacksonville Nursing Research Annual Symposium featured dozens of participants, celebrating advancements in nursing education, practice, research and innovation. Nursing professionals, researchers, educators and stakeholders united to share and present ideas that will ultimately translate into excellence in patient care.
Dr. Karen Reed, faculty member, continues her Southeast Asia summer adventure in Hanoi, Vietnam at Vin University preparing students to take the NCLEX. Reed is working with the first group ever to take the exam. She also will hold workshops for clinical preceptors to help train students in the clinical setting and will help with plans to start a graduate program at the university.
Keeping skills sharp was the order of the day for the 2024 cohort of Accelerated BSN students on Thursday. About 80 students participated in a workforce readiness event in the HPNP Auditorium where several skills stations, led by UF Health nurses and College of Nursing faculty members, focused on procedures the students will likely see during their upcoming ICU rotations with UF Health.

The fun continues with the UF Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP)! Today, all 80 students visited the College of Nursing’s Kirbo Innovation and Learning Lab to have a “Closer Look” at nursing as a profession. Participants got hands-on with a nursing escape room, as well as learning new skills, such as CPR, airway and cardiac assessments. We hope today’s experience opened new doors for these freshmen and sophomores to pursue nursing and to . 🩺🥼💙

We are incredibly proud of faculty member Karen Reed, who is making a significant impact at the Kampot Regional Training Centre in Cambodia. Since 2012, she has dedicated her time to teaching nursing students and was the US Fulbright Scholar in 2013-2014. Dr. Reed’s innovative teaching methods, using flip charts and markers, help overcome the challenges of limited resources and language barriers. Her dedication and the students' enthusiasm truly shine through in her work.

Today, we mourn the loss of Gator Nurse Dr. Teresa Bruney, a cherished faculty member who passed away on May 2nd after bravely battling illness for a year.
