A steady rain fell on a grey Saturday, but inside an art studio classroom, vibrant colors nearly leaped off the pages of Maryn Skylar Olson’s sketchbook and from the self portraits spread out on the table. Maryn is an artist, skateboarder, surfer, student and most recently a traumatic brain injury survivor. Art is her way of communicating a powerful and personal story that she hopes will help others better understand brain injury. “Art saved my life when I was losing my mind,” she said, pointing out that each self portrait depicts her scar. Over the past year, Maryn has been recovering from a traumatic brain injury and stroke that took part of her vision. She remembers being in the hospital after a life-saving surgery and a nurse giving her a coloring book, which eventually led her to discover that she wasn’t seeing the full pages as she was coloring. Maryn kept creating art, even through the hardest and darkest times. As a visual arts and education major, she wants to teach art therapy to help brain injury survivors like herself. An exhibit of Maryn’s art will be on display at the Noyes Arts Garage of Stockton University in Atlantic City April 10-28. Meet Maryn at the opening reception on April 13, 1-3 p.m. “I have recognized a positive change in self-awareness and confidence, but what I love most is her undeniable joy of making art,” said Michael Cagno, executive director of the @noyesmuseum. Maryn is also a standout student. Patrick Burns, of @stocktoncareers who teaches Surfing and Society, said, “In class, I immediately noticed Maryn’s positive energy and distinctive, free-spirited, artistic fashion. She embodied the soul surfer in every way.” Burns described her art as “powerful and moving.”
