Delta Academy (ages 11-14) and Delta GEMS (ages 14-18) are national programs geared toward the mental, physical, emotional health and wellbeing and academic success of at-risk African American girls in our communities. The Gastonia Alumnae chapter is proud of our thriving Academy and GEMS program right here in Gaston County. Our girls are amazing! Check our their submission for the South Atlantic Campaign contest, where they created a PSA to raise awareness about emergency preparedness for National Disasters and inclement weather. They did that! #GastoniaAlumnae #DeltaAcademy #DeltaGEMS #DST1913 #SensationalSAR #SENSATIONALLYSAFE #YES2SAFETY
A Conversation with Viola Ford Fletcher
On February 15, the Gastonia Alumnae Arts & Letters Committee and our guests had the honor of sitting with Ms. Viola Ford-Fletcher, who is just shy of 110 years old and is the oldest living survivor of the Tulsa Race Massacre. She is the co-author of the book, “Don’t Let Them Bury My Story,” along with her grandson, Ike Howard. Together, they shared a testimony and #livinghistory lesson with us! Watch and learn:
• Why we must use the word ‘massacre’ not ‘riot’ when talking about #BlackWallStreet
• What life was like for Ms. Ford-Fletcher as a little girl
• What you can do to keep the history books from burying Ms. Ford-Fletcher’s story
