Videos by Dobbin House Tavern in Gettysburg. The 1776 Dobbin House, OPEN DAILY, serving food and spirits- all in the candle-lit glow of history!
Visible Battle of Gettysburg scars at the Dobbin House! On July 2, 1863, Union forces were positioned along the south end of Gettysburg, including the Dobbin House and its barn along the Emmitsburg Road, while Confederate troops occupied the entire town. A Union soldier, Private James Carver of Company A, 55th Ohio, was in the northern attic window of the Dobbin House exchanging fire with Confederate sharpshooters located in opposite Gettysburg attics. He recalled Confederate artillery fired at the house- “in about two or three hours the rebels threw four shells at the house; the first one struck the chimney on the east of the house, the second struck the northeast corner, the third struck about six feet from the ground on the north side, and the fourth near the west, about ten feet from the ground.”
At one point, the Union troops in the Dobbin house and barn were driven from their positions as the Confederates captured the buildings. It is likely the southern sharpshooters then moved to the southern attic windows (the brick gable end shown) to rain musket balls on Union troops positioned near the Emmitsburg and Taneytown roads. Returning fire shattered numerous bricks in the southern gable wall. Battle scars from this exchange can still be seen today. Video by Dave Johnson, Gettysburg Images

Dobbin House Underground Railroad
Fox 43 TV filmed at the Dobbin House! Reporter Marshall Keeley of WPMT-TV was on-scene to uncover the secret hideaway in the historic Dobbin House for a story on the Underground Railroad in south central Pennsylvania. An 1810 addition to the Dobbin House, built by Matthew Dobbin (son of Rev. Alexander Dobbin, the original builder of the 1776 Dobbin House) included a small alcove between the 1st and 2nd floors. Here, by long-standing tradition, Matthew is known to have hidden escaping enslaved people on their perilous journey to freedom. Located next to the walk-in fireplace in the kitchen of Mrs. Dobbin, the area looks like a built-in kitchen cupboard. Open the cupboard doors and there are shelves for storage. The shelf slides back to reveal a three-foot-high crawlspace where people stayed hidden by day until continuing their journey north by night. The camouflaged hideout is open for guests of the Dobbin House to view.
Want to know more about the Underground Railroad? A program with Frederick Douglass, an escaped slave and abolitionist (interpreted by Nathan Richardson) will be given today, Saturday, February 3, 7pm, at the Adams County Historical Society. Tickets are free for ACHS members and $10/general admission. Information and tickets: http://tinyurl.com/3u9knddz.

With a little AI magic, this 18 second video covers 248 years of Rev. Dobbin's home and farm- from 1776, when the kitchen and spring were only one story, to 1810, when Rev. Dobbin's son, Matthew, added a second floor above the kitchen, to today, when the home is a colonial tavern where guests can relax in a true piece of American history and "eat, drink and be merry"! Thanks to Dave Johnson of @gettysburgimages for this amazing time travel!

Measuring 9.5" tall by 8" wide, the candlestick comes with the "spinner" and the love story of Sarah White and her father. What a great present from the historic past! Including tax and USPS shipping, $44. Add $4 for 2 Dobbin House cream tavern candles. Ordering is a breeze, call 717-334-2100. Also available in our Country Curiosity Store, open daily 10am-9pm.
Our RUM BELLIES VENGEANCE, the Dobbin House signature drink, goes well with an Irish reel since Rev. Dobbin, who built the Dobbin House in 1776, came from Ireland. Such Rum based drinks were the most popular in 18th century taverns, and with New England not producing the amount of molasses needed to furnish the growing demand for Rum, colonial ships smuggled it from the West Indies to protest and avoid paying the duties imposed by the British "Molasses Act of 1733". With your 'Rum Belly', enjoy a molasses-based dessert that was also a favorite of early Americans. Our freshly baked, moist, gingerbread, prepared with the Christmas seasonings of ginger, cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon, is served warm with a smooth, creamy lemon sauce. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Our thanks to Dave J. who created this video of what he calls "the Elixir of the Gods"!!

chicken on spit
Spit Roasted Chicken! Our tender, fresh birds are sprinkled with a special blend of slightly spicy seasonings, skewered to a spit and basted in their own juices as they turn continuously until a delicate brown and crisp outside, and moist and sweet inside. Served on our Springhouse Tavern menu, a half-chicken hot from the spit includes a tossed garden salad, a baked potato and a hearth baked roll. New! Now served daily for both lunch and dinner. This healthy meal makes any day deliciously special!
Treat your palate! William Penn's Pork Tenderloin, served in our Dobbin Dining Rooms, is the perfect dinner for this weekend. As one of the leanest, most tender cuts of meat, it makes the best choice for our delicate, slightly sweet sauce made from fresh raspberries. With a lovely crust of simple spices, this tender, juicy, buttery-soft pork tastes amazing. It is also very heart-healthy with high levels of quality protein, vitamins and minerals while being low in fat. A good, balanced diet- healthy taste and essential history at the 1776 Dobbin House! #dobbinhousefood

Dobbin House "Kings Onion Soup" is "Good Soup"!
In the HBO TV show "Girls", there is a tearful conversation between two characters in a diner, after which actor Adam Driver defeatedly eats a spoonful of his soup and says the iconic line, "Good Soup." A 5 second clip of the line went viral on "Tik Tok" and users started creating their own videos with the audio of "good soup" from the movie. These clips have gained over 35 million views on social media! Destination Gettysburg came to the Dobbin House and made our own meme with our famous "King's Onion Soup". We think it's the best one of all the videos!
