Parents team with St. Anthony to equip Peninsula school staff with bleeding control kits - Gig Harbor Now 10/19/2023

Thank you Gig Harbor Now for helping spread the word!

Parents team with St. Anthony to equip Peninsula school staff with bleeding control kits - Gig Harbor Now Each of the school district's more than 600 classrooms have bleeding control kits, and staff members can access training on how to use them.

We have some incredible news to share! Thanks to the unwavering dedication of a group of local parents and healthcare heroes, the Peninsula School District (PSD) has received a heartwarming donation of nearly 600 bleeding control first aid kits from St. Anthony’s Hospital. 💪❤️

This extraordinary gift ensures that every classroom in our district will be equipped with essential resources in case of emergencies, taking a significant step toward ensuring the safety of our PSD family. 🏫🩹

Meet the incredible trio behind this initiative: Katrina Flowers-Piercy, Tiffany Crabb, and Shelly Voigt. As healthcare providers and mothers, they took the lead to provide free "Stop the Bleed" training throughout the district. 🚑👩‍⚕️ Their dedication and compassion ignited a powerful movement.

Superintendent Krestin Bahr and PSD’s Health Services Coordinator Miriam Atchison rallied behind their plan, resulting in over 100 PSD staff members receiving life-saving training through the "Stop the Bleed" program. 🩺📚

But it didn't stop there! Shelly Voigt, working at Virginia Mason Franciscan Health (VMFH) at St. Anthony's Hospital, collaborated with VMFH’s COO Dino Johnson to secure funding for these kits. 🤝🏥

Join us in celebrating the incredible support from St. Anthony's Hospital, the Tacoma Trauma Trust, Dr. Quinton Hatch from Madigan Army Medical Center, the Key Peninsula Fire Department and the Gig Harbor Fire Department, who all played a vital role in this initiative. 🙌🚒

I am so excited about this incredible donation from St. Anthony Hospital! When myself, Katrina Flowers-Piercy, and Shelly Voigt first hatched this idea of getting our district’s teachers and staff trained in Stop The Bleed, we knew a limiting factor would be getting the $ to get supplies into classrooms. We reached out to our network of incredible friends and colleagues and got just the right ear with the administration at St. Anthony’s. As a community hospital within the district we are trying to train, they jumped on board and went to work ordering supplies. Today this yearlong project came to fruition! St. Anthony’s supplied 635 bleeding control kits that were gifted to the Peninsula School District so that we may get 1 in each classroom as well as enough kits for Lighthouse Christian School. I am so full of gratitude. Now to get everyone in the district trained! During the past year we trained about a hundred school staff. A huge thank you also to Tacoma Trauma Trust for always supplying the things we need to train, and Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One for partnering in some of our classes! We look forward to more!
