After a warm dry winter, our mature tree's are struggling. Older trees are like people. The older they get, they have a difficult time dealing with stress and recovering. Now with a particularly windy season so far, our mature tree's are shedding limbs. Making it dangerous for people and property. I do a lot of risk assessments. Below is a picture. A bad pruning style called "lions tailing" It is a practice where all the lower limbs and inner canopy are removed. Its often fatal to your tree. Sometimes the full impact of this pruning takes 5-15 years. Often the correlation never gets made. Mechanical stress on trees is how the wind and snow accumulates and causes stress leading to failures. Lions tailing weakens your tree. Letting in more wind and snow, increasing the likelihood for failure. It also lets more sunlight to the root zone, which will make less water available. And usually this style too much canopy is removed. So now your your tree is making less carbohydrates and has less energy to deal with stress making your tree less vigorous. 2019 Casper, Wy resident dies after unlicensed tree removal company drops limb on homeowner. After this Casper made an ordinance, that a Certified Arborist must be on-site and have a permit to cut anything over 12 ft tall. Most other major cities in Wyoming already have such ordinances. In some states a company or individual cannot even give advise professionally unless Certified.
Scrolling through Facebook there is a a few dozen unlicensed contractors offering services from sprinklers, mowing, pruning, tree removal. I hope an accident doesn't happen in order to make the necessary changes and enforce rules and regulations.

We encourage our customers to take pictures of their trees 2-3 times a year. As a Certified Arborist this helps me accurately evaluate the health of your tree. Often the home owner might tell us that the stress and damage is recent. Usually that's not accurate. The tree has actually be suffering and in decline for years. We track and record temperatures, weather events, growing degree days. This helps us better manage disease and insects. For example: pine trees release a pheromone when stressed. The IPS Engraver Beetle can smell this chemical and attack stressed pine trees. So I know if we get golf ball sized hail in August that next year there will be a spike in pine beetle attacks. Than weather events influence disease. Drought, moisture, and wind impact disease presence and how it spreads. Late frost in spring, early frost in fall, drastic temperature swings all can cause damage to bark, roots, buds, vascular system, etc. So many biotic and abiotic disorders can cause damage that look similar. 🚫 I have found these capsules left in a total of 10 trees on 3 different properties ⁉️ These trees were treated a year ago and the capsules never removed. One form of treating tree is to inject. Sometimes it's the best way depending the situation. Holes are drilled into the tree. Than a prescribed amount of chemical is used. Than the capsules should be removed within 24 hours of injecting. Having them still in the tree a year later is irresponsible. Is drilling and injecting into a tree harmful? YES it hurts the tree. The benefits usually outweigh the harm. That is if diagnosed and treatment applied correctly. I dispute the diagnosis and treatment of the capsules left in these Spruce trees from over a year ago. Tree07 LLC, ISA Certified Arborist. Another long winded post. Twig anatomy explained= I can influence how your tree is growing by a well placed pruning cut. This is useful to control height and spread, or maybe to correct a lean. Also I use twig anatomy to tell how much growth it put on this year, last year, etc. That gives me get a visual record of how the tree is doing.
Pruning= A lot of trees I look at are dealing with stress from a bad pruning job that was done 5-15 years prior. Usually its to large of a branch that was removed. Pruning is wounding. The larger the branch the more stressful and its more difficult for the tree to seal that wound before pathogens get in. Or to much of the canopy was removed at one time.
The leaves are how trees make their own energy. (carbohydrates) (sugars) Tree's need energy to deal with stress and defend themselves. There is a direct relationship between the canopy and the roots. So when a tree loses to much canopy it can gravely impact the root system. I also put some photos on here. One is of "lions tailing." A poor pruning practice that I see it all over town. This is when the lower and inner branches are removed. This put more mechanical stress on the tree. From how the wind blows through to where the snow accumulates. This leads to failure of large limbs. This is not good for the long term success of your trees. The inner canopy should be left alone unless its rubbing, diseased, broken, etc. The last pic is a tree that failed to seal a wound.

We were 1 of 5 contractors called to give an estimate on removing 5 healthy trees to make a large driveway. By no means is this post meant to shame this or any property owner or another company. I thought all day on what to price this job at. Than I thought, what's the real cost of this job. I messaged the property owner that evening and told her I respectfully decline. But that I know some of the companies she called and they will do a great job. We have a competitive market, with high production, high profit business models.
First amd foremost I am a scientist, an educational practitioner. I manage the relationship between my community and trees. I focus on ecology, sustainability, and leading by example. The "A" word! The way people toss around this word is somehow offensive at times. The "A" word I'm talking about is the word "Arborist." If a person touches trees in their profession than they use the title Arborist. For those that know me, and know my personality. You know that I'm not gonna be outworked. My drive, passion, obsession, and knowledge is second to none. I'm a skilled ISA Certified Arborist. I practice arboriculture. The cultivation of tree’s. The science of how trees respond to their environment. I dont whack, chop, give hair cut, lift their skirts. I'm a tree surgeon. I can explain everything cut I perform. What type of cut, reason for, how the tree will respond. The impact on the tree decades later. I know how that tree seals wounds by pulling carbon out of our atmosphere. I know how the tree defends itself from disease and pest. I don't treat just the symptoms. I evaluate the health of your tree. I don't spray, inject, amend, sell lucrative treatments. I precribe treatment plans based off a highly skilled evaluation. I'm very aware that others offer these services but I assure you it's not the same. Our spruce trees are a perfect example. Years of Spruce trees decline in Gillette and the professional standard opinion was "fungus" and "mites." Our community deserves better tree care. I challenged what the others said. I paid for advertised post so other professionals could raise their level of service. We need to be educational practitioners instead of "for profit" pharmaceutical companies. As a owner operator Certified Arborist we promise this is a one of a kind service in Gillette. We are qualified to do top notch services others can't. Tree appraisals and legal cases. Water supply vs water availability. Watering your tree's with a drip line, to come on for 15 mins a few times a week isn't giving your tree what it needs. Our clay compactacted soils is hard for water to infiltrate. Poor drainage holds onto this water. With all this going on not much room for air and oxygen (soil porosity). This we call field capacity. If a tree remains at field capacity for too long it can lead to permanent wilting point. Watering your tree should be prescription based. I went to a property last summer and the customers tree had leaf scorch and 2 different landscapers turn the sprinklers up more. Saturated soils can cause the same damage as underwatered. So while there is water supply, but this water is not available for uptake. Clay soil is actually more fertile than sand or silt because of cation exchange. That's a measurement of positively charge particles. Our soil is full of nutrients. What your exact soil has I couldn't tell you. A soil test would be required to fully do a prescription based fertilizer. Turf grass likes bacteria microbes and is thirsty shallow plant. Trees like fungi microbes and deep watering. Planting a tree in the middle of your lawn isn't setting your tree up for success. And stop putting landscape fabric and rock over the roots. We provide 3rd party management. It can be overwhelming when you hire a contractor. We advocate for you and offer an objective perspective. Making sure things are done correctly with your finances and long term health of your trees in mind. From new construction around existing trees, or new landscaping. It's astonishing to me when people pay $100+ an hour for tree services. Usually you aren't getting the knowledge and expertise to justify that high of a cost. It's kinda like taking your car to a shop, and the mechanic pops your trunk open looking for your engine.
