Former UFC champion inspires next wrestling generation in Gilroy A former UFC champion and two-time Olympic athlete is helping to train and inspire the next generation of athletes in a town some might consider an unlikely place for world-class wrestling: Gilroy.

Former GHS Mustang, Chase Saldate, just made the announcement that he is now a Michigan Wolverine.

“I’m Excited to announce my commitment to the University of Michigan 〽️. Thank you to everyone at Michigan State University it was a great 4 years. I’m excited for this next chapter of chasing my dreams.”

Chase Saldate, a career 157lb'er at Michigan State, has announced his intent to use up his final year of (Covid) eligibility and will go into the transfer portal to determine where that will be.

ESPN announced last night that the commentator team for NCAA"s will feature former UFC Heavyweight Champion and NCAA wrestling All-American Daniel Cormier and two-time NCAA champion, six-time world champion and Olympic gold medalist Jordan Burroughs!

Congrats Chase Saldate for qualifying to the NCAA Championships and best of luck at the tournament.

Congrats Nicolas Aguilar for earning All-American status and taking 2nd place at the 2024 NAIA Championships.

Another season is in the books for our teams. We had a really good season, it seemed fast but what a ride. We had our state tournament this weekend and as always there are ups and downs but I could never question the effort these kids give me and our coaching staff. We had 3 state champions this year Daniel Zepeda, Cody Merrill and Moses Mirabal, 4 finalists combined, and 11 state medalists between our boys and girls teams.

The boys’ team collected another team trophy scoring 206 team points and placing 3rd and our girls placed 4th scoring 69 team points.

Congrats to every kid who made the tournament and to all the coaches, parents and our great staff that made all this possible from coaches to support staff you are the backbone of our program. Guys help me congratulate the Mustangs. Let’s go, Gilroy. I’ve coached 5 state tournaments and we’ve brought 3 team trophies to the great town of Gilroy!

The Mustang boys and girls had our league tournament this weekend and the kids sure did wrestle well. Our girls team scored a school record in the league tournament scoring 262 team points and the boys shattered the school and league record scoring 510 team points. On to the regionals next. Found these two former Mustangs far away from Gilroy at the Cumberland Open in Tennessee.

What a great accomplishment for any high school to be ranked nationally. For the first time in our program history and school history in any sport, we have two teams ranked nationally. Our girls' team is ranked # 4 and our boys' team is ranked # 11.
