I had an amazing weekend with the Father of Functional Medicine, Dr. Jeffrey Bland. He's been doing amazing work understanding the body holistically since the 70's! We discussed everything gut health, psychedelics, mental health, neuroinflammation, detox, SIBO, and even dove into Ayurvedic Medicine.

Some hard hitting points from this weekend's Microbiome Conference, "The Microbiome: Connecting the Dots of Root Cause Medicine", hosted by the one and only Dr Jeffrey Bland (the Father of Functional Medicine) and Kiran Krishnan, the founder of Microbiome Labs.

Slide 1: The way we think about mental health and mental illness is deeply flawed in the United States. If you dig into the research, there is no actual science or data illustrating the serotonin-depletion model. Furthermore, there is no blood test or lab test to show a physiological marker for Schizoprenia, Bipolar, Anxiety, Depression or any mental health challenge. So what IS going on? Inflammation and Neuroinflammation. Where does this inflammation come from? New research is showing a strong correlation between endotoxemia (gut-derived toxicity) and all mental health challenges. This is GOOD news! It means a holistic, Functional Medicine approach focusing on gut health, nutrition, trauma work and lifetyle medicine can reverse and resolve the condition. You can heal!

Slide 2: The big impacts of SIBO, Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth. SIBO is a big topic these days. Almost every client I see has struggled with SIBO. I see these elaborate protocols, antibiotics and years of suffering. The reality, if we correct digestion and nervous system dysfunction, SIBO resolves. Does this look a lot like Celiac? Yes, estimates are upwards of 60% of Celiacs have SIBO. If you've been diagnosed with Celiac, have been eating gluten-free, yet still feel sick- have bloating, brain fog, insomnia, can't tolerate foods, have constipation or diarrhea or both, have anxiety, etc. it's time to find out what else might be going on.

Slide 3: Sleep is one of the most foundational needs of the human body. We all know what one night of missed sleep does to our mood, productivity, food cravings, energy levels and brain function. But what if you have terrible insomnia? What if you've been taking sleep medications? I simply want to tell you that they are not benign. It is well worth your time, investment and willpower to find another way. Sleep is intimately entwined with gut health and neruological health, along with your Circadian Rhythm. This study illustrates the shocking rates of increased death due to sleeping medications. Let's heal your body instead of employing a potentially dangerous medication!

Hmmm? Why could this be? Is it perhaps because processed gluten free foods are SO processed? The starches used to make GF bread, cookies, crackers, etc. turn immediately to sugar in our body. We are marketed these foods as "healthy" because they are gluten free. If you transition your diet to real, whole foods such as vegetables, root vegetables, fruit, animal proteins, fish and healthy fats (coconut oil, olive oil, ghee (when tolerated), avocado oil, red palm oil, etc), nuts, and seeds, you will not get this diagnosis.
