Playing games brings joy to the learning process. Adding money to the mix? Priceless!! Here, a student practices CVC words from the passage we’re reading together to boost his fluency. Preteaching & reteaching words allows the child to have better mastery over the words when reading a passage. Added bonus: kids are excited to earn money to keep or use at our prize box “store”. I’m excited that they get practice counting by 5’s, 10’s, & 25’s. We trade coins, reinforcing money values, too. Win-win! This game evolved into locating the word in the text & reading the sentence it’s in, vocabulary, and using the word in a sentence of his own. When children learn through play, their resistance is lowered, their brains engage joyfully in the learning process, and neuropathways are more quickly formed to acquire new levels of understanding. This student is great at decoding but highly anxious about reading passages. We work on short phrases to help reduce anxiety and find ways to play to make learning come with EASE. This student LOVES paper airplanes, so, he read a phrase on a paper, discussed the main idea, and folded airplanes to his heart’s content!
