𝐈𝐌𝐏𝐀𝐂𝐓 𝐒𝐏𝐎𝐓𝐋𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓 Emma Kratcha, a UND student double-majoring in music and molecular biology, is strengthening her passion for music performance thanks to alumni and friends at the 𝐔𝐍𝐃 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐬 & 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬. The sophomore from Hankinson, N.D., has access to high-quality instruments and performance resources because of various endowments supported by generous donors. Gifts of all sizes to these endowments make a difference, allowing students like Emma to benefit from scholarships and other forms of support throughout their academic journey. “When I talk to friends who have also received scholarship support, we all come to the consensus that donor support is the reason we are able to pursue our passions and take advantage of great experiences,” Emma said. Emma believes it is important to show gratitude as it provides donors a glimpse into the impact that they are having on the experiences of UND students. #UNDProud #UNDalumni #ForeverUND

Holiday Magic from Markus
For over 20 years, Holiday Magic from Markus has helped sick children find joy during challenging circumstances. The program is a lasting tribute to a young superfan, Markus Bryant, who developed a special bond with the 2001 North Dakota Football team that won a National Championship. Markus wrote letters of encouragement to the team, telling them to “never give up, because then you will achieve your goal.” In his first letter, he revealed that he had cancer. The diagnosis, however, never brought down Markus’s positive and selfless spirit. When the team made it to the championship game, they invited Markus to join them. After the victory, Markus hoisted the trophy with the team and pushed his personal battle aside. He made sure everyone around him knew that it was the best day of his life. One year later, the football team wanted to find a way to leave an impact on the community and Markus immediately came to mind. They started the Holiday Magic from Markus initiative, providing holiday gifts and essentials for children in similar circumstances. Unfortunately, Markus wasn’t able to witness the start of the magic as the cancer took his life shortly after the program began. Every year since then, however, his magic has continued to leave an impact on children fighting similar battles. Last Saturday, aviation students received their scholarships at a special ceremony connecting the students to their donors. This was one example of how valuable the connection between alumni and students can be. After receiving their scholarships, some of the students took a moment to express a message of appreciation toward the alumni and friends of UND who support them. Beyond the Pages Season 1 Episode 5: The Engelstads
Jill (Owen), ’82, and David Engelstad, ’90, lived recently in American Samoa, a U.S. Territory in the South Pacific, where they made headway in their respective fields of physical therapy and engineering. Their story was first featured in the Winter 2020 issue of the UND Alumni Magazine. Working and living in third-world conditions both challenged and inspired the Engelstads. Now back in North Dakota, the couple reflects on their adventure in this episode of Beyond the Pages.#UNDproud
