Permanent weight loss can not be achieved by yo-yo-ing back and forth for decades on end, indulging throughout every holiday, and restricting (unsuccessfully) during the months in between. Both states are unhealthy, are exhausting to manage, and wreak havoc on your body, your mind, and your spirit. You can break this cycle. You can learn to detach yourself from this on-again, off-again sh*tshow. Diet and fitness culture in America carries many extremes, and one of them is the idea that you have to be pounding your body and sweating your pits off in order to get a good workout. It’s BS. In fact, chronic body-pounding and head-banging might cause long-term, chronic bio-mechanical issues you don’t want. Instead, WALK. Walking is, without a doubt, the most underrated form of movement that exists. It’s gentle on your joints and bones, the heart, lungs, blood, and gut absolutely adore it, it reduces cortisol (that pesky stress hormone that makes us hang onto fat stores), and it makes your heart and your mind brimming with peace, calm, and positive energy. Walking is gentle exercise, and we need ‘gentle’ in order to love and take care of ourselves in comfortable, joyful, and sustainable ways. Walking was, and continues to be, a major player in both my weight loss and maintenance. I’ve grown so in love with it and will never stop. It requires no special skills, no gym, no money, and you can take your walking practice with you wherever you go: work, travel, vacation, friend dates, etc. It’s always there for you, to give you space for reflection, to nurture your health, to support you in achieving your goals, and to help you take care of your body. "But I don't have your level of discipline." I've heard it a thousand times. The truth is, discipline has very little to do with it. What matters most is how good at the game you get. And you know what makes you masterful at the game? So that you win? PRACTICE. Every day, through the tough moments, the hard situations, the occasions where it would be easier and more comfortable to submit, indulge, and give up. Pushing our health to new standards, achieving the weight happiness we deserve and are entitled to, it never gets easier. But when we practice our strategy everyday, we get stronger, and when we get stronger, everything we work so hard at feels so good, so right, and SO. FREAKING. WORTH IT. You can absolutely handle it. Like a boss. Just do it.
