‼️TOMORROW‼️
We had a BLAST today at the Really Really Free Market! Despite running out of items within six minutes our President made a quick run to the store for more items and we had enough for everyone! Thank you to those who put together such a wonderful event!
The GRPD’s response to the events that took place on March 8th and 27th.
In response to questions in the community about the expressive speech event on March 27th, Chief Payne provided this update to the City Manager. In part it reads:
"Due to the increasing occurrence of free speech events, I am committed to an on-going review of the Department's overall interactions with groups and individuals in the broader context of community-police relations and will continue to work with stakeholders to ensure that in both policy and practice, the GRPD will:
--Protect the free speech and peaceful assembly rights of individuals and groups within the parameters of City Code.
--Encourage all groups and individuals to follow the permitting process and expressive speech policies set by the City.
--Only step in when there are violations of the expressive speech policies, or other applicable laws, statues, and ordinances.
--Hold all members of the Department to the highest standard of accountability and transparency."

Imagine if a BLACK MAN was resisting arrest, chasing after police officers, and trying to steal a police vehicle… He would have been killed instantly. But cops NEVER shot this WHITE MAN despite him being a THREAT to officers multiple times.
Defund the GRPD
Commissioners didn't talk much about the GRPD or the GRPD budget at Tuesday night's city commission meeting, but many people called in to express their anger and frustration with the GRPD's arrests and targeted harassment of protesters, and to call for defunding the GRPD.

Sheriff Earle Brown, founder of the city where Daunte Wright was murdered, was a longtime member of the K*K
Are we even surprised at this point?🙄🤦🏽♀️
thenorthstar.com Not only was Earle Brown a sheriff, and the founder of the Minnesota State Patrol, he was a lifelong bigot and a literal Klansman.

This is Kim Potter — the officer who killed Daunte Wright... but did she know the difference between a handgun and a taser? Let’s review the facts:
She is a 26-year veteran of the Brooklyn Center Police Department. She was 6 YEARS into her law enforcement career when Daunte was BORN!
She also serves as police union president. She has defended questionable actions in the past.
Here’s an example of her doing just that:
After the fatal police shooting of Kobe Dimock-Heisler, Potter gave instructions to other officers on how to protect themselves and obscure accountability: “Officer Potter instructed Officers Turner аnd Akers to exit the residence, get into sepаrаte squаd cаrs, turn off their body worn cаmerаs, аnd to not tаlk to eаch other.”
Potter knew exactly what she was doing.
She knew how to obscure the truth.
In that instance, her actions were clearly intentional.

STOP POLICE HELICOPTERS IN OUR BLACK AND BROWN NEIGHBORHOODS!

On Friday, March 26, 2021, our Black and Brown communities were once again targeted and surveilled by the GRPD and their collaborators at Michigan State Police. This intrusion into our neighborhoods is outrageous, as the police targeted Black and Brown neighborhoods exclusively.
- People complained online and in-person that their neighborhoods had been turned into a militarized zone and a police state.
-Veterans and others with PTSD were unable to rest and there is reason to believe that some had significant mental health difficulties that night and during the following weekend.
-Families who have lost members to gun violence are retraumatized by the presence of the helicopters. Who is accounting for the harm done?
-Not only is there little solid evidence that helicopters are effective in crime prevention or deterrence, many of the behaviors that are criminalized are better addressed with community care and accountability.
-Increased surveillance is not the answer and uses up precious resources that belong to the community.
-Though arrest numbers may have risen, giving the false impression to some that the helicopters are making the community safer, many of the charges are the kind that result from over-policing and are about engagement with the police themselves: Fleeing and Eluding, Resisting and Obstructing, etc.
- The GRPD has touted their community engagement before they deployed helicopters and has said that the community wanted this. Not only is this self-selected to residents who are comfortable talking to officials, but no other options or frameworks are being offered to address the community's fears, such as community care, restorative justice, youth programs, and other options known to increase community safety and cohesion.
We demand transparency as to the cost to city taxpayers of extra patrols and helicopters. And we demand that we defund the GRPD and return the funds for these costly measures to the communities where they belong, so they can be used for healing. And we demand that GRPD stop the helicopters and surveillance of Black and Brown communities!
