A good short video on how fall leaves and yard debris in storm drains contribute to phosphorus problems in our waters. Please help keep our neighborhood storm drains clear this year!
Angie Hong on TikTok Replying to yard waste has a lot of phosphorus so we want to keep it out of our lakes. People can compost at home or send it to a community compost facility. Only the litter gets thrown away.

What is happening in the Webster Avenue median?
You may have noticed some changes in the Webster Avenue median north of University Avenue. In 2018, the City installed a series of vegetated swales in the median. The purpose of the swales is to slow the flow of stormwater and increase the uptake of water into the soil, which helps to filter out pollutants that would otherwise discharge to our waterways. This is best achieved using native vegetation rather than traditionally low-cut turf grass.
This year, the Public Works Department has contracted for evaluation and maintenance of the current swale vegetation along with a pilot study of new plantings in one of the swales. Coming out of the 2018 construction, the desired vegetation did not establish itself and has led to a lot of undesirable vegetation. Our goal is to eventually have all of the Webster Avenue swales function as intended with native vegetation. This process will take time, so we appreciate your ongoing patience throughout the duration of this project.
