Hey Everyone!

No episode today! There’s a lot of cool episodes to catch up to though🙂 There’s so many cool ideas I have to grow this baby and it’s a pleasure for me to figure out how to execute all the ideas I have. However, life is throwing curve balls and focusing on making sure I don’t get smacked by one of these curveballs has taken priority.

I’ll be back soon 💕

Amplifying : The Crazy Misconceptions about Black Alternative Culture!

and I met back in the Kathleen Clay and Webkinz days (who knows how many years ago). Throughout the years we have randomly seen each other throughout the city and more recently through our lack of silence on the topic of systemic racism. See, the plan was to solely focus on having her educate me on the misconceptions that are associated with black alt culture but as usual we explored other connections to this issue. This culture receives excessive scrutiny because of their expression of the oppression within the world. I learned how the cultural appropriation of black alt culture is something that people do without even realizing it. It's brainwashed into us to see this as a white culture...…which then causes racial stereotyping without education or understanding of the history, fashion, culture and its practices. Gatekeeping is defined as the activity of controlling, and usually limiting, general access to something. As we spoke more on the issues gatekeeping poses we can clearly see it causes more division than unity. I also picked up on how there is more to learn about cultures that have been misappropriated for profit, which is way too many in my opinion. We live in a culture so quick to cancel something they don't understand out of fear vs logic or white wash it for profit. We see it everywhere as a trend without considering the origins and sacredness of these people, places and things. We went on to look at Greensboro specifically and I came to learn way more about how this culture is very prevalent in this city through artists such as Black Haus who are a representation of this culture and also local. She broke down all the different subgenres of cultures that could be considered alternative and when I say it blew my mind, it's understatement. There is a lack of safety in expression that is common and toxic in society. There is a quickness to be shut up or feel the need to hide, I admire the boldness and refusal to succumb under the racial gatekeeping/assumptions of who a person is based on how a person looks. We jumped into local past house shows/venues and how if you thought they are anything like a concert, that is just not the case. House shows create a community where expressing yourself with people who feel very similarly is the goal and letting it all go is the roadmap to get there. Yes, they can be overwhelming to navigate so knowing some etiquette is important before going to a house show and she gave tips and tricks for those who may have considered it. The live music, art, expression and the ability to organize these shows is something important to the culture and is surely missed Kosmickarma went through a brief history of the house show scene in Greensboro including Ice House, Grime House and Road Closed. There were some examples of toxic expression as well the strides taken to make sure that people stay as safe as possible without limiting their expression. I learned so much in this episode and as I continued through my days after recording I began to see how this culture is everywhere and how respecting the bravery to be one hundred percent the person you want to be is something worth admiring! We spoke on how people should respond to the culture and the hurtful ways that can no longer continue if we truly are to build bridges.

This week’s episode is simply what I can only describe as necessary. It's challenging and imperative to navigate the realities of r**e, assault, bar culture, r**e culture and the general overall safety for people in the community of Greensboro and beyond. As someone who has struggled with navigating the lines of privacy this conversation was enlightening and something that I believe is everyone's responsibility. No one is safe if we can not create a space to address the things that people have a hard time speaking about. I did an episode a couple of weeks ago with Daniel White when the Greensboro Predator List was still a hot topic and I posed some questions that raised some brave souls to approach me about how they felt! One of those brave souls is Devon McKnight, she introduced me to Alexa Feldman who has been one of the many people in a community that has arose to allow survivors to speak out and be protected, this comes in the form of the NC Safety Alliance. I am beyond honored that they chose my platform to be a place where they could speak out as well. These courageous women put their names out there along with their stories and have taken on the heat that comes along with the community's fears about the unknown. Privacy is something that I touched on in Part One and we continued that conversation because of the harms that come along with privately handling something that changes the life of a survivor, forever. The problem that we see in our community is the inability to speak on the dangers that are blatantly in our faces. To silently address each survivor after something has happened is simply too late and not effective enough, we all have a responsibility as members of this community to make sure that it is a safe one. We spoke on the many ways a survivor can receive justice ,but the real challenge is empathizing with abusers in a way that still protects a survivor. It requires a heart that is willing to hold abusers accountable to their actions and call them to be members of society not cause loss of innocence. This is not just about women it is about our children, our friends, our families and the places that make Greensboro such a special place. The alliance as I learned through this conversation are simply focused on elimination of the toxic r**e culture that we can easily miss if we do not pay attention! Privacy to someone who has the ability to diminish the value of a human life is simply intolerable. What are we doing to protect the community that loves us? Is there love if we simply turn a blind eye to the cries of the people who are simply seeking someone to listen to them and believe them? How people choose to beat the wounded further by privately attacking them is toxic, this is why transparency has been a big push for the alliance. There is incredible strength in numbers and the access the community has to this information gives me as a survivor hope that we can eliminate more instances of people who can relate to this unacceptable behavior. Are we holding our bar communities to a standard to prioritize the people they serve? Is money more important than the safety of the people who allow this communities' local businesses and people to be successful? We MUST have hearts that are willing to listen, love and grow. It is imperative to know the people who need the community to step in and simply say NO. Conversations about anything are possible only if we have ears that are solution seeking. I admire that there is a call to simply acknowledge the disparities that make this community petrifying to people who have seen it's darkness. We can not be afraid to speak out when we see violation, we can not ignore the cries of survivors and we simply have a obligation to be aware of the best ways to make sure that we reduce the numbers of people who can relate to sexual violence.

So grateful for Triad City Beat and their constant light shedding to the uncomfortable subjects that need to be addressed in order to create safe places for unity and so much more.

Honored to know Devon & Alexa, as well as the work they do in order to see safety in our community.

When Tim told me that he wanted to broach the subject of Grief and Loss, I was completely shook not only because of the uncomfortable subject but because the recent loss of Chadwick Boseman and how important this conversation is. WAKANDA FOREVER, seriously though. In this very brave episode Tim & I unpack the heaviness that accompanies grief and loss. We acknowledge that there is a difference in the process of grieving for different genders & races. The dangers of capitalizing on grief and refusing to empathize with the panic that accompanies the grief. We spoke on the continuing journey that society seems to be taking to create walls to hide their pain. What can we do better to help each other? If anything life is very short and very long at the same time and the people that we choose to live this life with can be the key to keeping us on track to healing and growing. Some solutions we offered that could be right, wrong or in need of revision included the choice to forgive, artistic expression, friendships with people who make time for you (tea), time, adventure, hope, and creating memories with the people who mean the most. Let's create safe places for people to be vulnerable about their grief and loss as well as navigate it with as much grace as possible!

Happy Labor Day!
I am so excited to share with you the upcoming episodes of Embracing Discomfort, as more people have reached out there have been some incredible subjects that have been brought up that have shocked me and made me become more aware of myself and this wild world we live in. I want to challenge everyone to seek the unknown. Seek the people you love to go on the discomfort train with you, it's always better when you have people who challenge you out of your comfort. Be brave this week and if you haven't caught up on these conversations please do so.
I've loved getting your feedback and messages. Thank you for taking empathetic critical routes as you've approached my direct messages.

Things to look forward to:
*A conversation on Grief and Loss
*A educational piece on the prison systems of America
*The reality of unemployment during a pandemic
*PART 2: Men, Women, Predators with a bigger focus on privacy and safety.
*Black Alternative Fashion/Culture

Enjoy this image of the sun blinding my eyes for it depicts the craziness and awesomeness that this journey has been for me. Thank you so much for the encouragement and the bravery to voice your opinions and have conversations that allow us to be able to connect as a community.

Much love always and thank you a million :)

Dom and I have a enlightening conversation on the topic of Self - Love and how it is the missing piece to the bigger picture that we can only begin to start seeing. We dive into the areas of life that lack a understanding of the benefits of having Self - Love. We consider if the BLM Movement has been co-opted? What even is ANTIFA? The way that self-love is slowed down by co-dependency. Who are the Rothschild's and why do they own all these banks? Why is the world seeming to make the most sense in a time where it seems beyond chaotic? Dom spends a lot of time looking past what the media tells us to pay attention to and sees that there may be a bigger force controlling everything we know. We had so much fun recording this episode, there was so much laughter and I learned a little about a lot of different things. The portrayal of picking sides rather than admitting we may not know if there is one side that is completely correct. The time that we should all take in order to process how we feel and what we want from life. Dom also tells us his unorthodox journey that led him to seeking self love over worldly love. We hope you start considering some of the things we speak about and do some digging for yourself.

It's no secret that Christianity is a controversial religion in North America. What is the Church doing well and what are some points to critically analyze as we look at this religion? In the current climate of the world how is being a Christian something you have to Love or Hate? What can we do better as warriors for Jesus? Are Christians loving more than they are hating? Why is religion something that people have a hard time talking about and how can we speak to people who don't share the same beliefs? There was a lot more to uncover and there is so much more controversy than we got to ,but what is going on with God's church? Why is the Church so quiet? Rachel and I sat down and started a very special conversation about the Church as two women who just do their best to Love God and love our neighbors. She broke down the anthropological definition of racism and how we misunderstand that definition of that word. We dove into boundaries, safe spaces and racial divisions......all the while laughing at the span of the things that divide us as humans ,but even more so as Christ Followers, we offer some solutions and hope anyone regardless of their background can share with us in this uncomfortable conversation!

Much Love!

Hello Beautiful People,

Just a friendly reminder, wearing a mask isn't just about you....it's about the people around you more than anything. Be Courteous and WEAR A MASK!

Have you tuned in to the exciting conversation with Abby about racial conversations? No? Do that it was so good! Abby is simply what I can define as a debunking warrior. We tackled the silent divisions that cause different races to have a hard time communicating. It sure is uncomfortable!

Also I took you to my favorite place, Common Grounds GSO in the most recent episode! There's some time before I drop another doozy on you all on Thursday!

Much Love and Love Each Other.

Amplifying Local Businesses @CommonGroundsGSO w/ Dusty Keene - Embracing Discomfort 08/20/2020

Hey Guys,

Hope you've grabbed your coffee this morning! Episode 5 is about my favorite place to get coffee. In this episode I sit down with Dusty Keene and he gives me a little history of the place and we talk about what makes Common Grounds so special! From the local goods displayed throughout the place to the one of a kind blend that can only be found in this coffee shop. Common Grounds is a place for everyone as well as as every animal it seems! Local Businesses are the heart of any community in my opinion and I hope to highlight some of the local places that I stumble upon and get us all on the local business train.
Fair warning there is some static in the first couple minutes. They will pass and there is one point where I get super loud but hopefully it wakes it you up lol

I hope you enjoy! Much love :)

I'm pretty regularly found at this little haven on the corner of Elam and Walker and i'm excited for you all to hear the story behind it. There's still some time to catch up to what is already out!

Episode One: Is a intro to what I want this platform to accomplish
Episode Two: A conversation with Daniel White about the safety of men and women.
Episode Three: A conversation with Ryan Parham on the military and the things simple truths on the weight of the uniform.
Episode Four: A deeper dive into the divisions between races using me as a the guest!

Im RELEASING EPISODE FOUR BEFORE BED TONIGHT cause I’m a busy bee and I might forget tomorrow😅🤣
Abby wanted to interview me......and this is basically what happened.
Abby is simply what I can only describe as a breath of fresh air! In this episode we dive into my story a bit more.....because Abbie is just like me, full of questions. We broach the subject of childhood identity crisis's, political correctness, white privilege, racial unity, authenticity, generational patterns, what can white people do better and the constant theme throughout the entirety of the episode, laughing at the hypocrisy. This episode was such a blast to record and it was one where there wasn't any plan except let's talk and record it. Enjoy this painfully hilarious perspective from two people who simply refuse to allow it to continue.

Next WEEK AUG 20th, I saw down with the owner Dusty Keene! You don’t wanna miss that!👏🏾 share, like, follow, listen & send some feedback 💗

Much love

Waiting for August, hanging off my seat!

Be kind to each other. If you would like to be a guest on a future episode my DM’s are always open. I’ve loved having the silenced, loud, angry, educated, sad, confused, uneducated, shy, (many more adjectives) members of this community ask if they could speak on something in the future. The answer is always yes. The obstacle is time. So I’ll need to plan accordingly depending on a lot of factors I won’t explain right now.

It’s time to give the unheard a place to speak. It’s your choice which episodes you tune into or if you even don’t care. It’s all a choice.

SHARE SHARE SHARE

The choice is always yours but we as a community can no longer be silent. Embrace the discomfort of hearing opinions that differ from yours. Let’s grow together😎
