RECENTLY PROTECTED: Possum Holler, a roughly 79-acre property in the Oolenoy River Valley in Pickens County. This permanently protected land features hardwood forest, a rich understory, and about a mile of streams, including the south bank of the Oolenoy River. We are grateful to the conservation funders that made the protection of Possum Holler possible: SC Conservation Bank, Upstate Land Conservation Fund, and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.

*Grant* news from our Clean Water team! We were recently awarded more than $280,000 from SC DHEC and $36,000 from the Anderson Regional Joint Water System for a second phase of water quality improvement projects in the Three and Twenty Creek Watershed in Anderson and Pickens counties. In collaboration with project partners, these grant funds will enable UF to implement 40 septic repairs, 10 agricultural improvement projects, protect over 1,000 acres of high-quality lands, and facilitate a stream bank repair project in this critical watershed.

Plus, UF’s Clean Water rockstars — pictured here — have just been rewarded more than $91,000 from SC DHEC to create a watershed-based plan for the Rocky River watershed. A watershed-based plan (WBP) provides a framework for restoring water quality problems in a watershed by identifying issues in a watershed, proposing solutions, and providing a strategy for putting these plans into action.

These projects are funded wholly or in part by the US EPA under a Capitalization Grants for Drinking Water State Revolving Fund Grant and a Section 319 Grant through the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control. Stay tuned for more info!
