Thank you Pat for sharing about my practice. I am honored!
When Pat Larsen went searching for an acupuncturist, she was pleasantly surprised to find one right here in her own backyard. She talks about it in the latest Reflections… Then and Now at https://porcupinesoup.com/reflections-acupuncture-and-chinese-medicine-right-in-our-backyard
Ms. Liu's little talk
Liver Meridian is the last meridian among the twelve principal meridians. I choose to start with this one is because in my practice I see many patients showing liver meridian stagnation. Liver meridian stagnation is a common condition in modern society.
Each meridian has its entrance and exit, because a meridian is like a pipe which has Qi flowing through it. Liver meridian starts from our big toe, ends somewhere under our breast, and has an inner exit through our eyes. If liver meridian accumulates too much heat which has no place to go, pathological symptoms will show, such as headaches, poor sleep, inflammation in our eyes, and vertigo.
Ideally, Qi is supposed to flow very smoothly, circling around our body. If any part of our meridian system has stagnation, we do not feel quite right and get tired easily. Something feels wrong but we do not really know how to describe it. If there is Qi stagnation in Liver Meridian, we tend to feel that there is some pressure around our chest or pain in ours ribs. We may tend to get annoyed and lose our temper easily. Females may feel tenderness around their breasts, especially before periods.
If our liver does not have a strong blood flow, it means our liver lacks nourishing blood. People who do not have such blood flow to the liver tend to have cramps, muscle stiffness, brittle nails, or dry eyes.
Liver meridian also plays an important role in our mental health. If there is Qi stagnation in liver meridian, we may feel melancholy, pessimistic, and depressed. According TCM theory, this is where the depression is coming from.
Keeping a smooth flow of Qi through liver meridian is key to preventing the ailments mentioned above. Acupuncture treatment can release the energy blockage, like heat or Qi stagnation, helping to promote the smooth flow of energy. It is also important to give our liver a chance to rest. The Qi flow of Liver meridian move most active from 11 pm to 1 am. During this time, we should be resting to give our liver a good rest.

Just like blood vessels and nerves, meridian is another network which supports lives. If there is a stagnation somewhere in our meridian system, diseases occur. Take this leaf as an example, if all the pathways are clear and smooth without any blockage, it can stay on for a long time. Human body is no exception.
