Monthly Training Tip:

Timing is Everything

One of the most valuable skills you can develop in dog training is timing. In practical terms, delivering reinforcement promptly helps create a clear connection between the behavior and environment its outcome. The closer the reinforcement occurs to the behavior, the more likely it is that the learner will understand the relationship, and be motivated to repeat the behavior.

A generally excepted rule of thumb is that to be most effective reinforcement should be delivered within 1.3 seconds of the desired behavior.

The same idea holds through for correction as well. If you were going to correct the behavior that you don’t want. (jumping on grandma, peeing on your cat, chewing on your Chuck Taylor.), if you can’t deliver the correction within about 1.3 seconds of it happening let it go. The dog has moved on by then, and is less likely to associate the correction to the infraction. It’s more likely to damage your relationship than teacher, pup, anything of value.

You Can’t Apologize to a Dog!

If you’re unfair to your dog it will take some time to rebuild trust. If you have a solid history of reinforcement trust will be restored faster. Be slow to anger and quick to forgive and your dog will be as well.

Our primary focus in training is all about building a solid communication system.

A few of the super cool pups we have in training!

After a year of working and learning with Dexter, he transitioned to his next placement. He’s likely to be approved and accepted as a police K9. We’re excited to have him continue to grow, learn and serve but it was still tough to see him go.

He was with me from 10 weeks of age to just past a year and was a big part of my advanced trainer training. As a pup he was my demonstration dog for Pet Trainer certification. Through an advanced training after I passed the academic testing, he made me look good in the practical demonstration passing his Foundation Dog certification through assessing his progress in advanced obedience, scent discrimination, tracking, and protection work.

He was also by my side through Master’s level certifications in Protection and Service Dog training. He’s been a big part of my advancement as a trainer over the past year and he’ll be missed.

SMSGT Joseph R. Riemer USAF EOD Force Development Manager met his new K9 companion "Teal" today. I am so honored to be able to assist our warriors in dealing with the challenges that come from facing the enemy head on and defending America and our core values.

Joe is still active duty and he will be interfacing with pretty much every EOD guy in the near future, with his Battle Buddy "Teal" by his side.

Teal is an amazing example of the Foundation Dog program. Obedience, Tracking, Scent Detection and Advanced Obedience are areas that teal received scores of 100%.

We look forward to working with Joe and helping others at the EOD Foundation!!!

Can you imagine how powerful it will be for active duty folks to WITNESS the power of a service dog with their Combat experienced INSTRUCTOR?

Red is heading to his new home with Bob. Bob is a Vietnam Vet and career law enforcement officer.

He’s still serving his community as Assistant Chief of Southport Police Dept. We’re proud to have been a part of placing the two of them together as a team and honored to have met a new friend.

Michael Hertzog received K9 Guardian yesterday in Allentown Pennsylvania. Guardian was a call sign that Michael resonated with and an appropriate name for his new battle buddy.

Jane is an Army Vet in the Indianapolis area that we are glad we got to meet and work with locally in ‘s initiative to train and place 15 quality K9 companions with 15 deserving veterans.

The training of both sides of the leash is critical for the greatest success. We’re excited for both Beta and Jane.

He’s another of the impressive dogs made available through a generous donation and the support of the growing nationwide network to place with a local veteran by Nov 11th

Blue! He’s a 2 year old DDR German Shepherd. He’s got a solid base in obedience and protection and is still stable and friendly with everyone I’ve seen him meet.

I hear he’s not a big fan of heights but we’re working on functional acceptance and he’s doing well.

She’s a 5 year old spayed female She’s a sweet little girl!

Meet Red! He’s trained in advanced obedience and is available to place at no cost to a veteran.

The placement would come with handler training as well as follow up support.

He is a 4 year old black Dutch shepherd. He’s got great focus and a strong desire to please. He’s also got a strong prey drive making him perhaps not the best in a house with small animals.
