Grand Lake Area Info has information on how Monkey Island got its name. Some believe that the island must be shaped like a monkey. But that's not the case.
In 1928, a family visited a Tulsa Zoo. In the park was a small island with a moat around it where the monkeys were kept. Soon after a Tulsa reporter came through Bernice, which is located near Grand Country Lakeside RV Park, and visited with the couple about the changes the lake would make. Since this area was surrounded by water the couple jokingly said, "Over there will be Monkey Island, where all the monkeys will be." Sometime after this, the report was printed in the Tulsa World and the name stuck.
