The new changes to the Public Employees Retirement System Board were brought on by the board's decision to increase the amount municipal governments contribute to each employee's paycheck by 5% over a three year period. This would have increased the contribution rate to 22.4% with the first increase of 2% on July 1. This legislation, Senate Bill 3231, will limit the strain placed on city and county budgets while still giving PERS the boost it needs to serve our government employees. There will be a 2.5% total increase over a 5 year period at 0.5% increase in the employer contribution rate per year. In addition to the rate changes, The Board no longer has the authority to increase the contribution rate put on state and local governments to help pay for the retirement system. The Board is only able to make recommendations that will then be decided upon by the Legislature. Lastly, this legislation does NOT disband the PERS Board itself. The Board and its member selection process remain the same.
