For , Collab is celebrating Urban Empress Co.

Collab’s Storytelling and Marketing fellow, Jezrie Marcano-Courtney, sat down with Friends Latoya Jones and Tonji Ormsby of Urban Empress Co. — a beauty, cosmetic, and personal care business that graduated from the Fall 2021 Collab Accelerator cohort.

For Jones, the idea for Urban Empress Co., came from a recognized need for natural hair care products. “My son was experiencing dry scalp and I couldn’t find any products for him,” Jones said. “Latoya [Jones] presented me with the idea,” Ormsby added, “One day she calls me and says guess what? We’re going to have a business meeting!”Soon after, Jones decided to apply to the Collab Accelerator program: “A friend of mine who graduated from the accelerator told me to apply after I spoke to him about my business idea.”

Jones told Jezrie the Collab Accelerator, “gave us more organizational skills, [including] helping us to take things step by step, try and if it doesn’t work, try again. And if we succeed, keep moving forward.”
Additionally, both Jones and Ormsby agree the Collab Accelerator provided them with a community of entrepreneurs. “Everyone [in our Collab cohort] had such amazing ideas– like minded people bringing ideas into fruition is something you don’t get everywhere,” Ormsby said.
