Certain cancers are among the top causes of death in the U.S. - and Louisiana’s incidence and mortality rates are higher than national averages with the 5th highest cancer mortality rate in the nation.
Among men in Louisiana, prostate cancer is the 2nd leading cause of death. Louisiana men also have a higher prevalence rate of colorectal cancer than women.
Simple lifestyle habits like exercise and diet can lower the risk of some cancers. Additionally, catching colorectal cancer early means it’s almost always survivable, which is why everyone 45 and older must be screened regularly.

This is our National AHEC Organization! Thanks for all you do for providing opportunities like this to our members and scholars.
🎥 This week, we hosted a virtual film screening of the documentary Matter of Mind: My Parkinson's followed by a panel conversation/Q&A with film director and producer, Anna Moot-Levin and film participant, political cartoonist, and graphic novelist, Peter Dunlap-Shohl.
Over 100 AHEC Scholars and others joined us for this event and were highly engaged with Anna and Peter afterwards in the panel discussion.
🧠 The Matter of Mind: My Parkinson's screening, coordinated by the National AHEC Organization for member AHECs and their students, presented the poignant true stories of individuals living with a degenerative illness.
Thank you to Anna and Peter for your time and energy, and thank you Peter for sharing your story in such an honest, inspiring way.
👏Thank you to the crew at ITVS for your partnership and support and thank you to all who attended, it was wonderful!
