Summer is a great time to lay down mulch when caring for your new and mature trees. However, pacing too much mulch around a tree’s base could be harmful. How much mulch is enough? Most experts recommend to keep mulch 3-4 inches away from touching tree trunks or shrub stems, and 1-2 inches away from perennials or annual stems, often referred to as a “mulch donut." Did you know we have an orchard? In 2018 I planted 600 trees of several varieties that will produce enough for a modest u-pick season this fall. Another 600 planted in 2022 are thriving, but the dozen planted this year are the best story.

My great great grandfather was the first Bean to farm here, buying this land in 1854. Coming from New Hampshire, he brought various stock with him. We knew he planted a few trees but no clue what varieties.

Reading one of his diaries just last year, cousin Roger found an enty that led to us planting several Red Astrachan apple trees. This connection to JW Bean means a lot to me and I can’t wait to share the apples!

All organic mulches should be applied after plants have begun to grow and after the soil has warmed. Organic mulches are composed of things that were once parts of living plants such as wood chips, shredded tree bark, leaves or compost. Organic mulch decomposes in place and improves the soil. Two to four inches of mulch is sufficient in garden beds—more than that could block oxygen or water from reaching roots. Mulch should not be allowed to contact plant stems, as this increases the risk of disease; mulch should be kept back two to three inches from the stems of young plants or shrubs. Mulch around trees should extend to the drip line—which is the outer edge of the reach of tree branches. At the very least, mulch should not cover the root flare of the tree and should NEVER be piled up around the trunk to create a “mulch volcano.” The soil should be w**d-free and moist before mulch application.
