I love scanning old negatives from my Dad’s darkroom. I feel like I am time traveling. This image here is something that you probably won’t see very often now or in the future. He took it at a Hanover High School Halloween Party. I am thinking it was the early 1960s.

Bobbing for apples was part of the Halloween tradition up until recently, (thanks Covid), and originated centuries ago in Europe. In New England where I grew up, freshly picked apples were readily available and the game was played at many parties during autumn festivities.

My personal memories of bobbing for apples leaves me feeling stressed out. It was quite the difficult game, especially if you had bangs.

I particularly hated the anticipation of being next in line to stick my face into a cold tub of water, mouth open and ready to bite into an apple which may or may not have had another set of teeth marks on it. I remember trying to cheat and look for the apple with a stem attached to bite on to.

I do think it is sad that it is now one of those games which kids these days will not experience (like jarts). It was pretty cool to be a Gen X’er and experience these moments in time. This photo really is precious.

Things that I did summer of 2020 when quarantined…

I was inspired by the concept of church directories.

And developed 4 characters from a church, In SC .

I think I watched Steel Magnolias before this shoot.

Never before released, I love these gals.

The glasses worn by Charity belonged to a neighbor child I lived by when I first moved to CA. A few years ago her dad had a yard sale and I bought these glasses, and wanted to include them In a shoot.
