Frost Laws are still in effect! 👀 Check out this classic video about our operations and why we are unable to service Paper, Boxes & Bags carts during this timeframe in Bay Harbor, Bear Creek, Little Traverse and Resort Townships. Residents in the city limits of Alanson, Petoskey and Harbor Springs may continue use of rolling carts.

Good Morning! ❄️ The snow is back. How much do you think we’ll actually get? 📏 ♻️ Make sure to keep your recycling totes and carts accessible for our drivers to pick up!

Emmet County Recycling keeps things rolling with alternative methods of collection during frost laws in Northern Michigan.

Wipes--disinfecting wipes, baby wipes, and all the rest--are NOT RECYCLABLE. Further, according to numerous sewer operators, wipes--even those wipes labelled "flushable"--should NOT be flushed. [DISGUSTING INFO AND IMAGES AHEAD, read on and/or watch video at your own risk] Wipes don't down break up like toilet paper, instead clustering up with the grease in sewers and forming globs that back up household pipes and regularly plug up sewer lines and pumps. If you must use wipes, dispose of them in the trash going to landfill, please. If possible try the following alternatives: > a spray cleaner and washable, reusable rags for household cleaning > a spray bottle of water followed by toilet paper. These will save you money, too! #WipesNotRecyclable #WipesNotFlushable #DontBelieveTheWipe #EmmetRecycling #RecycleMI #fox13utah Video Credit: Fox13 Utah February 10, 2020

Prevent BATTERY FIRES! 1. Before storing or recycling fire-prone batteries, tape their terminals (+ and -) with clear tape. The video shows a quick way to tape the terminals of a bunch of lithium button batteries. Which batteries are fire prone? > All lithium batteries (Li) > Batteries 9V and greater (often in "cordless" devices) > All batteries from electronics 2. Only recycle batteries in designated battery bins. NEVER in curbside or drop-off site bins. Batteries placed in paper/cardboard or bottles/cans recycling bins are likely to be crushed or compacted. These situations have been causing CATASTROPHIC fires at recycling centers around the world. We've had four battery-caused fires so far. Where are Emmet County's designated battery recycling bins? See https://emmetrecycling.org/what-do-i-do-with/batteries-bulbs for the full list. Recycling batteries is vital to supplying materials for the batteries that will power your next cellphone, cordless drill, or even vehicle; now you know how to do it safely!
