Лавровым листом называют листы «лавра благородного», принадлежащие к семейству Лавровых. Его родиной считаются страны Малой Азии и Средиземноморья. Это одна из самых древних пряностей, которые использует человек. Эфирное масло, полученное из лавровых листьев, применяют в производстве алкогольных напитков и в кондитерском деле. Лавровый лист применяют также в медицине, в химической промышленности, используют как сырье для получения цинеола и камфоры. Венками из ветвей и листьев лавра венчали головы победителям соревнований и героям походов и войн в Римской Империи и Древней Греции, а дерево лавр было для них священным. В Средневековье лавр был символом добра и считался защитником от молний и зла. Слово «лауреат» происходит от «лавр», что буквально значит «увенчанный лаврами». В нынешнее время лавр произрастает практически во всех странах, которые климатически подходят для культивации. Это Турция, Греция, Италия, Франция, Испания, Португалия, Кавказские страны, Албания, Гватемала, полуостров Крым.
