/ Heraclitus /
"Heraclitus of Ephesus was an ancient Greek, pre-Socratic, Ionian philosopher and a native of the city of Ephesus, which was then part of the Persian Empire. Little is known of Heraclitus's life. He wrote a single work, only fragments of which have survived. Most of the ancient stories about him are later fabrications based on interpretations of the preserved fragments. His paradoxical philosophy and appreciation for wordplay and cryptic utterances has earned him the epithet "the obscure" since antiquity. He was considered a misanthrope who was subject to melancholia. Consequently, he became known as "the weeping philosopher" in contrast to the ancient philosopher Democritus, who was known as "the laughing philosopher". The central idea of Heraclitus' philosophy is the unity of opposites."

Did you know?
We have a 17-acre lake in the middle of Downtown Hattiesburg!

Duncan Lake is a hidden gem in the midst of our growing downtown. It's also the focus of a grant recently awarded to the Community Arts Center, Hattiesburg Landmark Preservation, Inc and Downtown Hattiesburg by the AARP Livable Communities and AARP Mississippi. An additional partner for the project includes our friends at Hattiesburg Alliance for Public Art.

The grant will go toward beautification efforts and arts programming at Duncan Lake, involving several community work days. The first, of which, will be this Saturday, August 21, from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m.

Volunteers will assist in clean-up efforts, painting seating, planting and completing community art installations. This event is family-friendly and children are encouraged to attend!

Please note - COVID-19 protocols will be adhered to in order to have a safe and successful event. We ask that all who may have been exposed to COVID-19 or who have recently been diagnosed, stay home.

To help the Community Arts Center adequately plan for the weekend, please fill out a volunteer form located --> https://bit.ly/hburgaarpchallenge.

We are SO proud that our 329 volunteers in 2020 have helped us to remove 59,695 lbs. of trash, despite COVID-19 halting our cleanups for five months.

Our goal was to beat our best year, which was 48,319 lbs. in 2019. Look what we can accomplish when we come together for our river, even during a pandemic! We're looking forward to hitting our new goal for 2021, which is 100,000 lbs.!

Because You Asked: Why Can’t I Recycle All Types of Plastic? 07/08/2020

Seeing how much plastic we use, many think that all plastics are recyclable. While this is not true, this article helps to breakdown the whys and hows on recycling plastics 1 & 2.

Because You Asked: Why Can’t I Recycle All Types of Plastic? The recycling symbol on your plastics only tells part of the story. Every community is different.

I did my 10! You do yours and post some pics! :)

It is 10 for Tuesday and after a holiday weekend, Mother Nature may need some additional care! Why not grab some gloves, bags, and friends for 15 minutes (or more) to pick up litter? As stated in the article below,
“Sure, picking up a few pieces of litter might seem nearly inconsequential when you think about the big picture. But here’s the thing—it feels tangible. Immediate.” I did mine so now it is your turn! https://www.adventure-journal.com/2019/07/why-i-pick-up-other-peoples-litter/

Quarantine fatigue really is a thing. We are all going stir crazy in our homes. It is possible to get outside, get some exercise and maintain our sanity. Head out the door and take a walk around your neighborhood (while practicing social distancing of course.)

Walking excercises the body and being physically fit helps to keep the mind fit as well. When you go walking take a bag with you and pick up any litter that you may come across. You'll be helping the community and taking care of yourself.

One of our members collected the litter in the picture below across the street from their home in about 10 minutes. It's simple and easy. Remember, you can be a better Hattiesburger by doing these three simple things:

01. If you see litter, pick it up.
02. Encourage your friends and family members to do the same.
03. Share how easy it is to recycle.

And remember Don't be a Litterburg!

Happy Earth Day! In fact this year is the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day! Since we can't have our annual Earth Day Celebration at Town Square Park let's have a virtual watch party! I invite everyone to watch their favorite movie or documentary about nature, animals or environmental causes/issues. Also please feel free to post the names of the movie/documrntary/series you'd like to watch in the comments below.

This is also an easy way for everyone to get ideas from others.

Great job, everyone!!!

Let’s all help keep Hattiesburg a beautiful place to live, work, and play! 😃🌳🌺🌎♻️😃

03/06/2020

Keep Hattiesburg Beautiful is SO EXCITED to be a part of the new anti-litter campaign “Don’t be a Litterburg!”
Check out the details below! 👇

The word is out. Don't be a Litterburg!

This morning, we launched the next phase of our sustainability program and we need YOU!

Friends, we ask that you commit to being a better Hattiesburger by doing these three simple things:

01. If you see litter, pick it up.
02. Encourage your friends and family members to do the same.
03. Share how easy it is to recycle.

That's it. If we all treat every place we visit like it's our own front yard, we can continue to move the needle on leaving our city better for the Hattiesburgers of tomorrow.

In addition to social responsibility, this initiative also includes special events, educational programming and business outreach.

To take your own pledge to be a better Hattiesburger or to learn more about how you or your business can be involved, visit hattiesburgms.com/litterburg.

Also - shoutout to our friends at The Lucky Rabbit for allowing us to use their artwork. A message/artwork created by residents intended for residents is important to us, and we look forward to watching the Litterburg's story unfold.

♻️😃 Recycling beads = free carousel ride at the Hattiesburg Zoo! 😃♻️

This is the time of year where Mardi Gras beads are endless, and you'll take home so much swag from parades you can't stand it! But, really... when the fun wears off, what will you do with all of those beads?

We can help!

Whether from the Hattiesburg’s 9th Annual Caerus Mardi Gras Parade this weekend or another parade - please consider recycling them.

Hattiesburg Zoo will have collection containers inside of its gates. All you have to do is drop them off! For your efforts, they will provide a free carousel ride for every donation.
