Furnitureland Rotary Club
Service to others is central to the theme of Rotary. The Rotary Club of Furnitureland has been serving the High Point and surrounding .
Communities for over 50 years. We have FUN serving others in order to impact lives.
Furnitureland Rotary distributed its year-end community donations. We gave a total of $15,000 to the following nine organizations.
$1000 to Growing High Point
$400 to Community Clinic of High Point
$1200 to The Ultimate Sacrifice
$1000 to the Carl Chavis YMCA
$7700 to Meals on Wheels
$500 to Guilford Education Alliance
$1000 to Coy's Dugout Fund
$1200 to Triad Honor Flight
$1000 to Boys and Girls Homes of NC
Thanks to the members of the club and the community for their support of the High Point Holiday Party, spearheaded by Joe Hellinger, for enabling us to make these donations.
Mobile Meals, our signature charity for about 50 years, recently joined with Meals on Wheels to eliminate redundancies between the two organizations and better serve their clients. Records going back to 1980 show that we've given them a total of $576,818, although we'd been supporting them in the 1970s too. Over the years all their money went to the food they provided for their clients. They took no administrative expenses for themselves. We're proud to have served the community in this way for so many years.
We were also glad to see charter member Coy Williard at our meeting to represent Coy's Dugout Fund. Coy has been a strong supporter of Rotary and our club since its founding. We're glad to give back to him to support one of his favorite causes.

Furnitureland Rotary honored its Fairview Elementary School Students of the Month for August, September and October.
Pictured from left are club member Randy Carda, Pam Greene from Communities in Schools, September's Student of the Month Jasmine Duley, and August's Student of the Month Kayden Carmichael. Major Vanderhall, Student of the Month for October, was unable to attend.
Students got to share a meal with the club and hear their teachers 'words telling why they were nominated for this honor.
Congratulations to all three of them.
(l - r) Fire Equipment Operators Jamie Caulder and Joseph Rathbone, Fire Captain H. Gray George, Police Lieutenant Rachel Juren, Fire Equipment Operator Ben Forrest and Firefighter Jacob Dykhoff were recognized by Fire Chief Thomas Reid and Police Chief Travis Stroud as their department's heroes of the year.
Rachel Juren of the HP Police Department was recognized for her efforts to bring together people who could work with the police department when they receive calls for mental health support. Police training doesn't usually include dealing with mental health issues, but the number of calls that they receive for this reason continues to increase. So learning about how to handle these calls and getting help from mental health professionals when needed is vital to supporting the community properly.
As was the case last year, the five firefighters were involved in rescuing a person from a house where they had gone to put out a fire. We're proud of our firefighters and appreciate their going the extra mile to keep us safe.
Congratulations to all our winners this year.
Today this year's winners of the Shirlee Carda Scholarship got their backpacks of school supplies and went on their clothing shopping trip.
Randy Carda gave a brief history of the scholarship, which was started in 1998 with 5 recipients. Over the years over 220 students have received about $68,000 worth of support as they entered middle school. And one of the recipients, Michelle Garcia, who was a 2011 recipient, continued her successful career by winning the HP Leadership Award in 2018.
This year's winners were Semj Autry, O'Mauri Drayton, Bryson Frey, Guy Hargett, Alondra Harrison-Isidro, Timothy Kinney, Michael Legette, Demetrious McKnight, Meda Nsabmana, Tatiana Ramirez, Karrington Waters, and RaMiah Williams.
Best wishes to these students as they continue their education in middle school next year.

Fairview Elementary School students created posters promoting the values that the winners of the Shirlee Carda scholarship demonstrate. This scholarship provides school supplies and clothing to 12 fifth grade students going into middle school who demonstrate the traits of good citizenship which the scholarship encourages.

Clarke Griswold may have taught us everything we know about exterior illumination, but we had to figure out pyrotechnics on our own. Cousin Eddie and Clarke himself would be proud of our holiday fireworks show!!!

Saluting our Veterans
Our guest veteran speaker today was Colonel Ray Williams. He started out in the National Guard at the age of 17 as a way to pay for college. But he's stayed in for 41 years, retiring next February after a career that took him around the world and had him on active duty since 9/11/2001. In 1994 he followed his father's footsteps as a preacher and became a chaplain in the army.
Why did he stay? For a very Rotarian reason: Service Above Self. He has put others as more important than himself and has reaped the reward of sharing some fantastic experiences with them as he earned their trust.
His Motto? Put others first!
