Week 3 of camp the teens has their chance to participate in cooking camp with Liberty County 4-H. They learned how to safely use kitchen supplies such as a toaster oven and got to make delicious meals like cheesy baked potatoes, chicken nuggets and strawberry banana smoothies! It was a tasty week.

In our second week of camp the we had the pleasure of partnering with Liberty County 4-H to put on a cooking camp for the kids. The campers that were in the 5-10 age group, along with some 4-H kids, had the chance to learn how to cook a few simple dishes. They made pizzas with biscuits, banana splits, ham and turkey roll ups and even had to chance to make a couple of tasty drinks. It was a blast and we are so excited to do it again with the 11 and up group in week 3!

While one group was learning to cook, the other campers were getting a chance for more camp activities. They were able to make Father’s Day gifts, bead bracelets, play a few games of kickball through the week and so much more. It was a great week.

Thursday, June 15, 2023
Thursday began similar to most days the past several weeks in Liberty County, replete with rain, thunderstorms and general ugliness outdoors. However, inside the confines of the Liberty County Boys & Girls Club (LCB&GC), almost seventy (70) Club Members were learning math, preparing tasty dishes like lasagna and pizza, shooting hoops with Staff, and generally bustling with energy while attending the first LCB&GC Summer Camp.

Additionally, a special visitor entered the doors to conduct her initial tour of Club facilities and activities. Coordinated by Staff Member Mr. Keith Murphy, the tour consisted of Ms. LaKisha Mitchell, Mr. John Brooks (Frank Callen Board Chairman), and Mrs. Edna Scott Walthour (LCB&GC Advisory Council Chairwoman). Suffice to say, Ms. Kisha was more than impressed with the sights and sounds of Camp.

Elementary, middle and high school children were abundant, and interacted with Ms. Mitchell and the entourage. She visited the cafeteria, reception area, admin offices, and each of the child Member’s ‘pods’, or areas where they’re introduced daily to Boys and Girls Club of America sponsored programs, such as “Triple Play”, “Brain Games”, and other ‘Interactive Learning Experiences.’

The tour ended with a conference attended by Mrs. Walthour, Mr. Brooks and Ms. Mitchell.

And by the way, if you didn’t catch the name….Ms. LaKisha Mitchell is none other than the Mother of one of Hinesville and Liberty County’s most famous sons – Mr. Davion Mitchell, guard for the NBA Sacramento Kings, and former Liberty County star. Her presence at the club was definitely appreciated.

The LCB&GC opened its doors on 6 February, 2023, operating out of the former Jordye Bacon Elementary School site at 100 Deen Street, Hinesville, Georgia, 31313. Though Summer Camp is half complete, the after school program will start up to coincide with the first day of school in Liberty County. Please stop by if you’re interested in your Child becoming an active Member. Hours are 3-6pm and programs include: Academic tutoring, Science Technology Engineering Arts and Math (STEAM) modules, video games center, gym/athletics, mentorship and social development. For more information, please contact the Club at (912) 977-1945 or (912) 667-3765.

Remember, “GREAT FUTURES START HERE!”

The kids had the opportunity to meet some feathered friends this week. The chickens were very excited to hang out with the campers. Everyone had the chance to learn new things about chickens including how to care for them and were giving the chance to hold the chickens. It was GREAT! Thank you Mr Roberts for the cool opportunity.
