This coral bark maple was getting a little wild! ! The bark on this beauty turns a beautiful coral red, this variety is wonderfully named “Winter Flame”. We are very busy and heavy into our pruning season! 🌳 ✂️
How tall are your daisies this year though? ☀️ 😄
Always double check your shrubs when pruning! You never know what you will find in them! Birds love dense shrubs to make their nests in! Another reason why thinning shrubs is important. In order to protect the birdies minimal pruning was done to this holly!
Guess what time it is!! It’s a hydrangea year for sure! Make sure your hydrangeas are getting enough water especially with the 90° days we’ve been having! Plants keep their cool via hydration! We hope you all are staying hydrated as well!!
It’s already that time to deadhead your daylily rebloomers! Deadheading, cutting back passed stems and cleaning out the interior and discolored leaves helps your rebloomers continue to bloom all season long! Woohoo! We had a beautiful visitor while we were doing just that!
‼️WEATHER ALERT‼️ ! We are sure you’ve noticed that we are in the start of a heat wave. 🔥 Your plants and shrubs typically need daily water, but when the temps are above 90° it’s a must! Do your hydrangeas look like this? You can see here these are very droopy and sad, and are actually flipped upside down like a frown! ☹️ Hydrangeas specifically are very unhappy in this type of heat.
We’ve included a link with some great info in the comments about how plants cool themselves ~ wouldn’t ya know it’s through water!💧 🥶 Also some great tips on watering. We hope it’s helpful to you all!
June is National Rose Month!! Are you enjoying all the beautiful rose blooms?! : Did you know that roses are the National Flower of the United States? The oldest living rose grows on the wall of the Cathedral of Hildesheim in Germany and is said to be over 1,000 years old! It survived a 1945 bombing that demolished the cathedral but it’s still going strong! 🌹 💪🏻 The largest rose ever was bred in California, measuring 33 inches in diameter!
Here are some photos of some of our clients roses! Enjoy! P.S. Roses typically need WEEKLY care to ensure their best health.
The deutzia this year is impressive! This flowering shrub does well in both full sun and partial shade, the deer tend to leave it alone, and the pollinators love it! Deutzia flowers for about 2 weeks keep your eyes peeled as they are flowering beautifully as we speak!
Fun fact: Deutzias are members of the hydrangea family!
It’s about that time! !!
The growing season has really taken off! With lots of plants and clients to take care of we are still hiring for the season! If you know anyone with gardening experience who may be interested please let them know about us and share our page with them. Part time positions available, and we may be able to work with your schedule! We only work weekdays! And we are fun! Please reach out to [email protected]
The azaleas this year are absolutely stunning. What a year it is, and will be for plant life!
The flowering cycle of the Nova Zembla Rhododendron
This Japanese snowball viburnum is even more beautiful because a few years ago it almost didn’t make it!
Had this beautiful guest today at a client’s house! This ruby throated hummingbird was happy to see me go after an annual planting. These giant catmints were all for him!!
Welll lookie here. You may be wondering why your Rose of Sharon (hibiscus syriacus) has so many little sprouty sprouts underneath it! Like this one right here. ⬇️ Those beautiful flowers that you look forward to every year on your ROS, well those are the culprit! After the flowers pass they create a seed pod. These seed pods quite literally disperse hundreds of seeds, as you can see here! The best way to remedy this and save yourself some valuable time on your hands and knees, is to deadhead the flowers after they’ve passed and before they get the opportunity to drop and spread all over your gardens!
The first bearded iris of the bunch to bloom, and what a view she has! I believe this is the Frequent Flyer variety. Happy Friday!!
At a client’s house today and we were all utterly shocked when we stumbled upon this!! More info in the comments!
Look at this absolutely gorgeous Yaku Princess Rhododendron. It’s sort of like a diamond in the rough. When not in flower you may actually think that this particular rhoddy is diseased due to its fuzzy leaves, but that’s just how it is. This particular client is very happy as they recently bought the house and it’s their first time seeing it bloom! Yayy! 🌸
One of our clients was having a new AC installed and this elderberry no longer had a home! As fate would have it, another gardening bed just opened up for it! We’ve been steadily transplanting at this property and are looking forward to seeing how everything flourishes. Especially this elderberry as it now truly has the room to do so! !
You may be wondering, what happened to this beautiful lilac? Our client was too, wishing that it had more flowers.
As you can see there is a somewhat odd growth pattern. Do you notice how the top and middle looks different from the sides?
Well this is because at some point over the winter this lilac was harmed with hedge trimmers 😭 This is similar to the hydrangeas we spoke about in a recent post.
You can tell this was the case by where and how the cuts are made, as well as the growth pattern. Flowering plants are NOT meant to be touched with hedge trimmers, and certainly not after they’ve set buds. So if you if you see someone in your yard with hedge trimmers close to your flowering plants, get them off your property quickly if you want your plants to be vibrant and healthy! 🌱 🌸 And reach out to an experienced gardening team that has a knowledge of each specific plant’s needs, as they vary.
We hope you all are enjoying all of the flowering fruit trees! The flowers will be gone before we know it!! 🌸 💖 🙌🏻
It’s Friday and it’s 5 o’clock! We hope you enjoy your weekend! This is a type of Japanese rose called Kerria Japonica. It is a flowering shrub that actually grows very well in partial shade. This is at one our client’s properties and it’s a beauty!!
I’m sure you are noticing all of your wonderful big leaf hydrangeas leafing out. A question we OFTEN get is “Why are my hydrangeas not producing any flowers?” 🌸
There are quite a few reasons for this, some of the most common are:
They are not endless summers. You may have another variety that only flowers once during the season, sad we know. Another is that we get hard frost after the buds have formed. Those two are beyond our control, but a totally preventable reason, which you will see below is when the actual terminal buds are cut off. You can see from the photo a terminal bud, (the bud at the top), is missing and clearly chopped off. While the other is formed and intact. If you see all, or the majority of these buds chopped off, this is likely due to someone taking hedge trimmers to the hydrangea. DON’T LET ANYBODY DO THIS!! You are cutting off all your flowers! And harming the plant! They don’t like this.
Hydrangeas, like most shrubs, require specific detailed care, at very specific times of year. For more info reach out to an experienced gardener 🌱 😊
