Almost 10 years ago I was asked to help gather youth to be a part of a study being done by Dr Beverley Jacobs of Six Nations, who was writing her PhD dissertation on the Impacts of Industrial and Resource developments on the wholistic health of Akwesasronon. At that time I was part of the Akwesasne Youth Leadership and I found it was hard to recruit youth because they seemed to be not interested and those who were, did not commit. In the end, Beverley findings showed that a lot of the youth did not feel that they were impacted by Industrial & Resource development. Which is positive because they are doing the things that our people were affected by Those Akwesasronon who participated in the study identified some of the impacts as the industrial plants, the border, colonization, the pollution, the casino and much more. Those Photovoice participants took photos and each photo told a story. Everyone's story is beautiful in their own way and the messages Beverley received during interviewing everyone showed that our wellbeing and wholistic health is linked to the Ohenton Karihwatekwen.
Now that the study is completed Beverley Jacobs will present to the community. Two presentations have been done with one more to be done next weekend. At the last presentation a community member said that everyone should hear the presentation especially the youth.
The next presentation will be on March 12th at the Snye Recreation Hall at 12-3.
