We are getting closer to the 2024 Hawai'i History Day season and need more volunteer judges to help us make this Hawai'i History Season a fun and engaging experience for our students. We have 300 more students participating in this year's events and we are excited to welcome them and encourage the hard work they have put into their research projects, but we need more judges to help us support our students! How can you help? Well, if you are interested in providing quality feedback to our student participants on their research projects, enjoy team engagement and are excited to encourage students on their journey? You may be a great fit! We especially need 50 more O'ahu-based judges for our fairs in the Central/Leeward and Windward district fairs. If interested or know anyone that may be interested, please visit: https://hihumanities.org/what-we-do/hi-history-day/guidelines-for-judges/ and learn more on what being a judge will entail and we strongly encourage sign up to be completed by next week Thursday, February 8,2024! As we come to the end of the year, we honor and reflect on the stories we've had the opportunity to be apart of and learn from. We continue to hold space and pule for our friends and ohana affected by the wildfires on Maui. As we reflect on this year, we are proud to share this moving poem by Hawai'i State Poet Laureate Brandy Nālani McDougall, "Only the Water" as shared by Zócalo Public Square. McDougall wrote this poem after researching colonial water diversion and receiving the public notice of contamination of Oʻahu’s water by the U.S. military. A Native Hawaiian whose ʻāina hānau, or birth land, is Kula, Maui, McDougall writes that her poem speaks directly to “plantation disaster capitalism”—corporate efforts to profit from the climate crisis. This year we celebrate 50 years of exploring Humanities in Hawai‘i and it has been a plentiful year of reflection and growth as we’ve had the opportunity to be part of community conversations across the State on building long lasting connections, community strength and healing. Our “Now Is The Time For Stories” programming dives in to stories about intergenerational connection, cultural identity and cultural healing, social justice and understanding across difference, storytelling (history, literature, etc.), and other deep topics that help us explore what makes us human, how we relate to each other, and how we strengthen communities. We are proud to share, "Memories of the Labor Yard and Kōʻele", by Lānaʻi filmmaker Anthony Kaʻauamo Pacheco & produced by Lānaʻi Culture and Heritage Center (Lānaʻi CHC) sharing stories and memories from kūpuna and elder kamaʻāina who grew up on Lānaʻi and memories of the Labor Yard and the ranch at Kō‘ele.
