CW: police brutality/ Call your people in California to call their Assemblyperson there and tell them to vote yes on the Kenneth Ross Jr. Act of 2021! This bill is critical and helps stop bad cops from skipping out on consequences, SB731 scoops from ACLU San Diego below Learn more about Kenneth Ross Jr., another unarmed Black man who wasn’t a threat to anyone, as shown by video evidence finally released two years later — killed by Gardena Police while minding his own business walking down a street: https://lasentinel.net/black-lives-matter-la-and-build-power-urge-community-to-vote-yes-on-bill-sb-731-the-kenneth-ross-jr-decertification-act-of-2020.html

More about SB731 from ACLU San Diego:

SB 731 will keep communities safe and keep officers who commit misconduct off the streets by:

Establishing a statewide process to automatically decertify officers who are fired for specified misconduct such as excessive force, sexual misconduct and dishonesty.
Giving the Civil Rights Enforcement Section of the California Department of Justice the power to independently investigate allegations of misconduct and decertify those officers who resign before they are fired.
Increasing accountability in various ways, such as requiring law enforcement to report all fired officers, requiring hiring agencies to gather information on reasons for an officer’s separation, and placing officers on a national database for more transparency.
SB 731 would strengthen the Bane Act.

This bill would also make needed changes to the Bane Civil Rights Act to disrupt qualified immunity for police officers in California. Qualified immunity shields police officers from legal responsibility for civil rights violations and makes it nearly impossible for families to successfully sue for civil damages in police abuse cases in federal court. SB 731 will provide Californians a strong state alternative to the commonly used federal civil rights law to remedy civil rights violations. For the thousands of impacted family members facing the trauma caused by police violence, this change will ensure that families can sue police officers for the killing of their loved one. This opportunity to hold these officers accountable could give families a sense of closure with officers being held at fault for the killings.

Trapped: How Britney Spears is Repeating The Story of Frances Farmer - Music Movies & Hoops 08/26/2021

Fascinating read and horrifying at the same time. They used to consider marital problems as a lead-up to declaring women “insane.” We haven’t come that far since this was done to Frances Farmer.

COVID Patients Fighting for Their Lives Are Still Refusing the Vaccine 08/18/2021

“Sitting upright on the hospital gurney with high-flow oxygen rushing through a nasal tube, Chandler explained that she and her husband both thought COVID-19 was just a hoax. While Chandler’s husband is still skeptical about her diagnosis, Chandler now says she understands.

“I'm living something I didn't believe. I'm living it. And people need to know that it is real. It is real, people are dying. They are dying,” pleaded Chandler, gripping the walkie-talkie in her hand.

While Dr. Meena had thought he broke through to Chandler, she’s still one of his many patients who refused to get vaccinated, despite being incredibly sick.

“She was going to advocate for vaccines when she left the hospital,” Dr. Meena said. “Over the last two days, she's gone back to her initial vaccine hesitancy.”

Examining and addressing COVID-19 racial disparities in Detroit 08/17/2021

The daily BAB grind rn like: Every time we have to clarify our position whether that’s supporting Hawaiian water rights, protection of Mauna Kea, racial justice, or a life-saving vaccine in a pandemic using biotech medical research developed in labs under protocols and not fields to sell pesticides, we lose some people! And that’s okay because we always gain back more people who understand there is not a singular dimension to the world, that care more about Black, Brown and Indigenous lives, and who value the data at a higher level, people who actually read the links we post. NEWSFLASH: It’s entirely possible to be against the deregulation of open air GE crops designed to sell pesticides, for preventative care and holistic medicine, clean water, Hawaiian rights, racial justice AND in favor of responsible biotech medical research done in LABS for human health and emergency, life-saving medicines such as insulin and vaccines which prevent death, severe illness, and disability.

We are asking you to take in the entire picture and recognize that pre-Delta, studies showed 1 in 645 Black people in the US will likely die of COVID this year. If you are a white person who thinks that eating clean will protect you from a virus that can be fatal, you are exerting your privilege in a situation where BIPOC have NOT had the same level of access to healthcare, medicine, or nutrients and are disproportionately affected by COVID. Furthermore, a lot of people of color and indigenous people have literally been experimented on by the US healthcare system, so have some compassion for folks who have generational trauma around this or are medically contraindicated from vaccinating or are children who can’t vaccinate. It’s up to everyone to do what they can to end the pandemic.

We’ve BEEN about racial justice and responsible research, that’s why what the chemical companies do is so egregious. Do not confuse the chemical companies for the hundreds of scientists whose work helped invent mRNA vaccines. If you’re not comfortable with them, wear your mask and take all precautions, consider the more traditional vaccine, wait for FDA full approval if you like, but don’t come here with elitist, anti-science views about how YOUR health with protect you when others don’t have that same privilege because it’s racist and classist. When you fight life-saving medical research and claim privilege in the battle to end the pandemic, you are making Monsanto’s talking points about the people opposing them partly true by being elitist and anti-science. This is not the place for that. We remain rooted in the science and data where we have always been. Does it mean a free-for-all biotech extravaganza and that we support GE crops now? Absolutely not helllllloooooooooooooo!

Here is an article from March of this year — pre-Delta — that helps explain the realities that Black people are facing in the pandemic. Before you comment, please read the article and think about it. We will not be welcoming anti-science or racist views about the pandemic here. We do welcome people who are understanding that you can both be against GE crop contamination and pesticide poisoning and also not want to die of COVID or cause other people to die of COVID. Obviously we weren’t clear enough for some of our followers but we have never been against controlled biomedical research for human health. Literally have promoted responsible geneticists, worked with them, lectured with them on ethics in biotechnology, but this cute name has got some people very confused so let us be clear.

Some data from the article: One in every 645 Black people in the United States can expect to die from COVID-19, per data from February 2021. Black people are 2.1 times more likely than whites to die from the virus. In fact, if Black people had the same death rate as whites from COVID-19, roughly 25,000 fewer Black people would have died in 2020.

Forbes editor warns companies that might hire Trump press secretaries: Magazine will assume everything they say is a lie 01/19/2021

let's keep this accountability level rising, there's a lot of cleanup to do but first we need to help the public sort fact from fiction, teach some critical thinking skills. If I was super monied I would totally invest in critical thinking centers that also offer lots of free or highly subsidized high level life skills to the public. Yeah, go take a martial arts class and then casually pick up some critical analysis while you snack on the empanadas from the Cuban cooking class with little mock- or cocktail from the mixology students. Maybe you get credits for completing community building courses like ongoing critical thinking, and civic education, how to organize your neighborhood, stuff like that, that can be used for technical classes or buying empanadas to go. You see all my plans, there's a lot of empanadas involved lol.

What’s your favorite chants you ever heard or did in a protest? I have a few but one of my all time favorites is one we made up in front of Monsanto’s Kunia fields at the first Oahu march on their gates in 2012. I was so angry with them, MONSANTO seemed to have pinged the cops on us, who had a former FBI detective calling us to nose around our protests and dm me on FB, it felt like they were trying to bully us! I was expecting Uncle Walter to lead it, but he made me lead it and said it was time for the younger generations to step up and he had put in his time and he would rather march this one from the back 😂 I was low key terrified of doing this but you can’t say no to the kupuna telling you your responsibility in their home and I had nothing prepared! So we made some up on the spot and stomped around in front of their property gate shouting things like:

We will not sit down
We will not shut up
And we will not buy your GMOs!

😂😂😂 more of that energy, we need some new chants in the streets for all we face and I feel like the more attitude gives you more strength and willpower to chant louder ❤️

Accomplices Not Allies: Abolishing the Ally Industrial Complex 12/17/2020

This article is incredible and has plenty to reflect on for everyone! Excerpt:

“Exploitation & Co-optation”
Those who co-opt are only there to advance self interests (usually it’s either notoriety or financial). As these “allies” seek to impose their agenda, they out themselves. The ‘radical’ more militant-than-thou “grassroots” organizers are keen on seeking out “sexy” issues to co-opt (for notoriety/ego/super ally/most radical ally) and they set the terms of engagement or dictate what struggles get amplified or marginalized irregardless of whose homelands they’re operating on. The nonprofit establishment or non-profit industrial complex (NPIC) also seeks out “sexy” or “fundable” issues to co-opt and exploit as these are ripe for the grant funding that they covet. Too often, Indigenous liberation struggles for life and land, by nature, directly confront the entire framework to which this colonial & capitalist society is based on. This is threatening to potential capitalist funders so some groups are forced to compromise radical or liberatory work for funding, others become alienated and further invisibilized or subordinated to tokenism. Co-opters most often show up to the fight when the battle has already escalated and it’s a little too late.
These entities almost always propose trainings, workshops, action camps, and offer other specialized expertise in acts of patronization. These folks are generally paid huge salaries for their “professional” activism, get over-inflated grants for logistics and “organizational capacity building”, and struggles may become further exploited as “poster struggles” for their funders. Additionally, these skills most likely already exist within the communities or they are tendencies that need only be provoked into action.
These aren’t just dynamics practiced by large so-called non-governmental organizations (NGOs), individuals are adept at this self-serving tactic as well.
Co-optation also functions as a form of liberalism. Allyship can perpetuate a neutralizing dynamic by co-opting original liberatory intent into a reformist agenda.
Certain folks in the struggles (usually movement “personalities”) who don’t upset the ally establishment status quo can be rewarded with inclusion in the ally industry.
