RIMPAC 2024
Over the past several days, Shriners Children's Hawaii, along with other health care facilities statewide participated in disaster drills associated with the bi-annual Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC), the world's largest international maritime training exercise. As hurricane season is June through November, the drills simulated the devastating aftermath of a tropical storm, with hospitals and medical facilities coordinating logistics and resources to best serve the community. Today, our hospital received a sudden influx of simulated "injured" kids in need of medical help and staff were tested on their preparedness and responsiveness as they worked together to treat or triage patients. Mahalo to all participants for ensuring our readiness towards disaster relief operations! #ShrinersHawaii #RIMPAC2024

Wishbone Day (Evie and Emily) - KITV Island Life Live
May 6 was Wishbone Day, meant to recognize Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI), an incurable orthopedic condition. Present at birth, OI is also known as brittle bone disease. To help spread awareness, Shriners Childrenʻs Hawaii patient ambassador Evie and her mom Emily spoke about living with OI yesterday on KITVʻs Island Life Live! Speaking with Island Life Live host Lina Girl, Emily mentioned that nine-year-old Evie's body cannot produce the right collagen causing bone weakness and increased susceptibility to fractures. Although Evie has had multiple surgeries to insert metal rods to support her bones, she is able to walk and enjoys doing the activities she loves, like ballet and building sand castles at the beach. They are very grateful to their family at Shriners Childrenʻs Hawaii, especially their pediatric orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Craig Ono. Mahalo to Evie and Emily for helping spread awareness about OI to our community! @ShrinersHawaii @islandlifeTV

Tribute to Fallen Soldiers Northwest
We were recently visited by the Tribute to Fallen Soldiers organization, their service dog (Junior), and several Gold Star families to mark their memorial torch ride in Hawaii. Their organization travels across the country with their motorcycle procession carrying their perpetual flame to pay tribute to local Gold Star families (those who’ve lost a loved one serving our country) and spread a little sunshine in the community. Warren Williamson (Executive Director of the Tribute to Fallen Soldiers) explained: "While making arrangements to come to Hawaii, we really made it a point to visit Shriners Children's Hawaii, because we wanted to meet the staff that does wonderful work to nurse kids back to health. That’s all we want, for our children to be well and healthy." Many of our patients and staff gathered to give pause during playback of “Amazing Grace”, followed by heartwarming remarks from Warren and our very own Dr. Craig Ono (orthopedic surgeon and fellow veteran himself) and Dr. Jennifer Weiss (chief of staff). Everyone enjoyed browsing the custom motorcycles and torch, and were especially happy to take selfies with Junior, a very docile two-year-old 150lb Russian Bear dog. Coinciding with Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day, everyone enjoyed a fun “Tribute Lunch” and given the smiling and excited faces of our patients, staff, and guests, we can say it was a hit! Mahalo to the Tribute to Fallen Soldiers Northwest and Gold Star families and to all who have or continue to serve our nation! #ShrinersHawaii
