Mauna Kea Watershed Alliance recently awarded water conservation grant
👏🏽Ho‘omaka‘i (congratulations) to the Mauna Kea Watershed Alliance - MKWA and the Big Island Resource Conservation and Development Council, its fiscal agent, for recently being awarded the Bureau of Reclamation’s WaterSMART Cooperative Watershed Management Program grant! This past December, the Hawai‘i Community Foundations’ Hawaiian Islands Environmental Finance Center assisted MKWA with applying for this grant. 💦What is the WaterSMART program? The WaterSMART Cooperative Watershed Management Program is an $8.9 million investment from President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to protect watershed health and build more resilient water supplies across the West. 💰What will MKWA and BIRCDC do with the funding? The MKWA in partnership with BIRCDC will update their Mauna Kea Watershed Management Plan on the Island. The Mauna Kea Watershed holds deep cultural significance for the people of Hawai‘i and is the primary water source for the Big Island. The project will create a 5-year action plan with full input from watershed partners and create a Wildfire Protection and Post-Fire Response Plan for all Alliance lands covering more than 416,000 acres. These actions will address resource concerns including impacts from invasive species, fungal infections affecting native trees that comprise the majority of forests on the island, habitat fragmentation, and wildfires, all which present major threats to island resources. The proposed efforts will involve federal and state agencies, private landowners, local communities, indigenous communities, agriculture, and environmental and natural resource nonprofit stakeholders. 👉🏽Learn more at https://www.usbr.gov/newsroom/news-release/4899 🌿What is HCF’s Hawaiian Islands Environmental Finance Center? Maui Strong Fund Grantee - Hawai‘i Land Trust and Kupu Maui
On May 2, 2024, we followed Matthias Nyquist, a Maui fire survivor, and the workforce crew from Hawai‘i Land Trust for a day of restoration work at Nu‘u Refuge in southeast Maui. When asked about what he likes about the job, Matthias said, “I like this job because I feel like it can make a difference. The change you’re making is tangible. You can see it.” Hawai‘i Land Trust is a Maui Strong Fund grantee. With so many people looking for work to help them rebuild their lives and hang on to the land they own, Hawaiʻi Land Trust, with the support of a $1.1 million grant from the Maui Strong Fund and in partnership with nonprofit Kupu, has created a program to create temporary workforce opportunities for 48 Maui residents who have been affected by the recent wildfires. Kuilei Place installs its own onsite greywater treatment system!
Congratulations and mahalo to Kuilei Place, a new condominium development in Mōʻiliʻili, for being the first in the state of Hawai‘i to install its own onsite graywater treatment and reuse system. The residential condo's graywater treatment and reuse system will treat water from sinks, showers, and washing machines, and reuse it for on-property toilets and irrigation systems. The system will save nearly 11 million gallons of water each year—enough to fill more than 16 Olympic-size swimming pools. Through the Fresh Water Initiative, the Hawai‘i Community Foundation is committed to innovative strategies to help Hawai‘i form long-term fresh water sustainability, and weʻre excited to see more projects like Kuilei Place that support long-term water security across Hawai‘i.

Holomua Marine Initiative: Cohort Spotlight
Every day is Earth Day at the Hawai‘i Community Foundation! The ocean and its resources are central to Hawai‘i’s livelihoods, culture, health, and lifestyle. Collaborative action is needed to ensure that marine resources are healthy and abundant for current and future generations. As Earth Month comes to a close, we are spotlighting the latest Holomua Marine Initiative cohort members, comprised of community partners whose mission and work align with the Initiative. This group of community partners were provided grant support for the Makai Watch Program, a collaboration between communities and the Hawaiʻi Department of Land and Natural Resources which at its core recognizes that the people who use a resource ultimately are responsible for its long-term health. Q&A with Dana Okano - Hawaiian Islands Environmental Finance Center
In January 2024, the Hawaiʻi Community Foundation announced the official launch of the Hawaiian Islands Environmental Finance Center. The Center helps nonprofits, community groups, and government agencies across the state access federal funding for infrastructure projects that will help in achieving the Fresh Water Initiative goals of improving long-term water security through conservation, reuse, and recharge. To learn more about this important milestone, we sat down with Dana Okano, director of the HIEFC, who shared with us the essentials of how this new finance center will work, and what she hopes it can accomplish. STORY: Bringing Early Education to More of Hawai‘i’s Keiki
As much as 85 percent of our brain development occurs from birth to age five, making early childhood learning one of the best investments we can make in our keiki’s health and our community’s future. This fall, more of Hawai‘i’s hard-working parents can start their workday knowing that their three- and four-year old children—and their fast-developing brains—are learning, growing, and thriving in a safe, enriching environment that’s setting them up for future success. That’s due to an expansion of Preschool Open Doors, a preschool access program that’s expected to allow 2,000 more children to qualify for subsidies, providing an early educational boost that will have a lasting impact on Hawai‘i’s collective economic and social well-being, especially for families who are Asset Limited, Income Constrained, and Employed (ALICE).
