Self care is critical to our wellbeing, particularly during stressful times. When our children are suffering, so too are we. Instead of putting ourselves last, we must find time each day to focus on ourselves. We cannot pour from empty pitchers.

I apologize for the hiatus, but I'm thrilled to announce that my NAMI virtual support group will be starting again soon! I'd also like to welcome new members to the group.

Hello all!

I hope that everyone is hanging in there. I apologize for the hiatus in our support group meetings, but I had some medical issues to attend to. Now that I am healing, I am ready to re-start our virtual meetings! Please comment on this post if you are interested in attending. Thank you!

Those of you who know me are aware that I'm a strong proponent of self care.

When parenting a child with mental illness, we tend to put the emphasis on our child's well-being. BUT DON'T FORGET about taking care of yourself! The only way that you can cope well and be the best parent possible to your struggling child is by taking care of yourself. Consider the following:

1. Join a support group (if you're reading this post, it's a great start)
2. Participate in therapy
3. Ask for help
4. Take time for yourself on a regular basis
5. Get away on occasion
6. Become an advocate

NAMI Keystone Pennsylvania is partnering with WellBeings, a national initiative, and WQED Multimedia to bring you the live panel discussion, Healthy Connections: Teens, Parents, Educators, and Mental Health. The conversation will focus on how parents and teenagers can find common ground when it comes to understanding and talking about mental health. The discussion will also cover how educators can play a role in closing the conversation gap.

The panel includes NAMI Keystone Pennsylvania Education Director Susan Caban, NAMI Bucks County PA Director of Outreach and Development Nicholas Emeigh, mental health advocate Elle Snyder, and LemLem Gamble, a student at Washington and Jefferson College. Producer Beth Dolinar will moderate the conversation.

We will be starting with ANGST a documentary on raising awareness around ANXIETY with our youths. The film includes a special interview with Michael Phelps.
