From the serene forest 🌲 in Bambi to the frosty landscapes ❄️ of Frozen, backgrounds are where animators can make their illusions happen. Adding to this richness of detail was the use of the multiplane camera which made it possible for levels of animations and backgrounds to move past each other at various speeds and distances, creating a sensation of depth and movement.

The Disney Multiplane Camera utilized up to seven layers of artwork, which were painted on glass and shot under a moving vertical camera, seen here. This tool elevated and elaborated the exquisite work of Disney’s background artists for 52 years until its final use in 1989’s The Little Mermaid.
