A common misunderstanding that I encounter with mineral and royalty owners is for them to believe that it's financially better to continue to receive monthly mineral and royalty payments over time rather than sell them for one lump sum. Truth is, it can be more advantageous to sell them for a lump sum because assets depreciate over time and eventually, they could struggle to get close to, or even surpass, the total of what they could receive if they would have sold them for a lump sum. It can take years, if not decades, for those monthly royalties to reach that lump sum offer!

Furthermore, it's important to remember that monthly royalty payments are taxed at ordinary income levels. If the interests are owned for longer than one year and you were to sell a portion (or even all of your interest) that sale would be taxed at long-term capital gains tax levels. This fact right here is definitely worth considering!

I own minerals and royalties myself and understand how my clients can become attached, but I help them understand these are investments, not family heirlooms. Waiting 10-15 years for the monthly royalty amount to match what you can receive from an offer that can close within 90 days ends up being a no-brainer for my clients once I help them understand the math.
