Should one tell their psychiatrist about drug use?
If you don't mind wasting your money and time seeing a doctor and not giving them all the information they need to assess the condition for which you are seeing them, go on and leave them in the dark about your pharmaceutical entertainments. There are all sorts of diagnostic clues in such things as .your choice of drug and the level of risk you are willing to take, but by all means, keep the doctor in the dark if, as I said, you don’t mind wasting your hard-earned money.
It's not the doctor's job to judge your hobbies, but if they aren't aware of your pharmaceutical adventures, any prescribing they do might hurt more than it helps. If your doctor seems prudish on the topic see another doctor. You need someone you have confidence in.
I believe the gentleman or lady who answered that a doctor might blame a bad reaction on recreational drug use. it's possible they will. Can you stop your recreations long enough to see if the adverse reaction goes away? If not, you are not entertaining yourself, you are dependent on the drug you are calling entertainment.
As someone who has been seriously affected by psychiatric conditions, both my own and the conditions of other people, I have to say:,
"Don't f**k around with this s**t! It's not a game! It could be a matter of life and death!"
It could mean your life or the life of someone you love.
In the best of cases, a drug will help some, do nothing for some, and kill others. If there are unknown drug interactions affecting the efficacy of a psychotropic medication, we're back to wasting your time and money. I'm not sure who put it this way to me, but "not only are a fool and his money soon parted, but a wise man has a moral imperative to be sure it happens at the earliest possible moment before the fool can employ the funds to hurt himself or others."
It's a cautionary tale, my friend.
Why do people try hard drugs, if they know they will likely get addicted?
Interesting question, considering…. the word “try”, if you simply “try” hard drugs you’re not going to get addicted. if you try them twice, you’re not going to get addicted. You are not going to be a part of the actual syndrome of addiction (that is, only physical addicted) even if you want to with all your heart because it’s a genetic thing.
Please do note that if you hurt your back, you’re prescribed the hardest drugs there are. Or have knee surgery. Or, a lot of times, even have major dental work done. All those people don’t have a likelihood of getting addicted. Pharmaceutical opiates. Yee-hah.
If you have been gored by a bull, should you not take hard drugs? Other people make or allude to a couple of points. One is what I’ve mentioned, you couldn’t become a hardcore addict if you tried. The other part - which is very true - is that in our cost/benefit analysis we ourselves, if we knew that doing he**in twice in a week would be okay, we’d do it three times. Addicts are SO like this and can see it in their childhoods even - their disease is more. Moderation is not in the vocabulary. Following the rules is certainly not in their vocabulary. Being cautious (except in cases where it allows you to be incautious in the future) isn’t part of that either.
I understand that we’re talking about “recreationally”. The thing is this. Somewhere between 20–30% of the population has a genetic predisposition to addiction. So how do you want to look at this? There’s an 80% chance you couldn’t get addicted-addicted (meaning, so bad that you can potentially lose everything) or is that you have a 20% chance that you could. That is not to say that you can’t do things along the line to reduce that 20%. And you are not “struck an addict”, because, you already are one at the age of 5 or whatever. I suppose if you lived a totally cloistered life, you would never encounter anything you can get addicted to. It’s also harder to stop the more you build up tolerance and dependence. This is true for anyone. But you can also be careful.
There’s no way of knowing which you are. I think I wrote about this on Quora very recently - at whatever, 16–30, you’re the same as your friends. I had a friend who did so many drugs between 18–25 that it gave ME pause. Burned-out-rockstar level. Then he got kinda tired of it, didn’t really feel like doing that so much, and it faded away. No big deal to him, no problem. On the surface, he was worse than I was. In the reality, I was on a pretty bad road for another 15 years.
Life is not devoid of risk. Using drugs isn’t more dangerous than an awful lot of things. You don’t want to have an active sexual life unless you know about contraception, about protection, about lo******ng. You can’t live on fast food forever either.
The other answers explore what might be exacerbating factors. I wanted to add the genetic hereditary realities and those risk factors - it really is just lifestyle education, physical education, personal education. There is little that is black and what, including this.
Are hard drugs bad?
I am gonna go against the grain here and say no. The drug is not bad, however, what you do with the drug may be. All things have purposes, drugs included. Opiates are great for short term pain from a broken bone but consuming it as a recreation is dumb because it is addictive and you do not have very good cognitive abilities while high. So you have a drug that not only makes you stupid but it causes you to want to keep doing it. Some drugs are very specific in what they do such as crack co***ne. It does it’s intended purpose very well, which is to separate you from your money. It is addictive and just a little will get you a buzz but immediately afterward you feel like crap and instinctively know that a little more will make you feel better. If all you have in your wallet is 20 dollars by the end of the day you will have most likely spent all 20 on crack. However it is also something that you can do a good deal of so if you had 1200 dollars in your wallet it might just take that as well. It is a habit that cost whatever amount of money you happen to have.
I have been addicted to many things in my life and have consumed a lot of drugs. My opinions are just that. My opinions. That being said, avoid man made powders and pills as much as possible. If you are determined to make your own mistakes instead of learning from the mistakes of others before you, minimise the damage and avoid the ones that have ruined countless lives.
If you want to be high, smoke a little pot or practice yoga and meditation or go climb a mountain. Even a few psychedelic experiences might be the magic you are looking for but avoid the hard drugs. There are millions of tragic stories you could just learn vicariously through the stories of others who have been there already.
