LAR Art Studio
Paintings and photography created by Lanecia A. Rouse Hello! My name is Lanecia! Studio 12 at Hardy & Nance Streets Studios is where my creativity often blooms.
I am a creative living in Houston, TX, & my work includes photography, painting, mixed media, teaching, writing & speaking. Most days you will find me there sipping on a cup of coffee with music playing as I create work that reflects what life has revealed to me about healing, freedom, and beauty found in everyday experiences. Acrylics, pastels, charcoal, paper, and encaustic wax are my mediums o
One of my favorite things to do is to do studio visits with other artists. I recently got to visit with my friend and artist Sarah Fisher in Houston, TX + I decided to share some pieces of her practice on Substack this month.
Whenever I step into Sarah Fisher's studio, it always invigorates me. It sparks my curiosity and inner muse. Our studio visits end up being a soulful exchange, where her expansive imagination unfolds before me, revealing layers of thought, creativity and feeling that linger long after I leave.
Excited to share this convo with you.
Pieces of Practice: A Studio Fragments Interview with Sarah Fisher Hello + welcome to my first Pieces of Practice post!
Hello Hello!
I’m excited to share a new series called “Studio Whispers" on my Patreon pages as I move toward my solo exhibition in Richmond, VA this coming January, which will explore themes of identity, radical self acceptance and compassion, liminality, connection, growth, and the power of story. Each Sunday from this day forward as approach the opening of the show, I will post reflections and insights that provide some insight into what has been inspiring my work over the past few months.
Through a mix of quotes, thoughts, and studio photographs, “Studio Whispers” will offer you a glimpse into the creative process, revealing the subtle nuances, voices and inspirations that shape my art. This is not just a look behind the curtain; it's an invitation to engage with the ideas that inform my practice and to connect more deeply with the artwork as it evolves. Don't hesitate to comment if something I post stirs a reflection within you or if you have a question for me.

10 years! ✨
It's been 10 years today since I chose to start LAR Art Studio and pursue my art full-time. It's been a long, twisty journey full of growth and grace. And I cannot help but celebrate the past as I continue on my own to plan + work towards a future that is uncertain + holds so much possibility!
I've faced some losses + hard hits, AND l've experienced so much delight, beauty + abundantly more than I could have imagined when I first envisioned my dreams. I'm grateful for it all- especially for the people l've met and the meaningful friendships that have deepened + the ones I have made along the way.
Most of all, I'm grateful to still be here doing the work that I love. Thank you to everyone who has supported, encouraged, and cheered me on in all the ways. Thank you for being here, for collecting my work, and for following my artistic journey.
Special thanks to my lil sis for inspiring me with your words + life, the residences I have done, places I have taught and my community partners, especially + the community in HTX I imagined better worlds with for a number of years. Also to for some great adventures + my first studio mate, risk companion + friend, !
It means more than I could possibly express in a post.
Sending so much love and positive energy your way!

Two more weeks to see REMAINS, my solo show on view at the through April 9.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Each piece in REMAINS integrates disparate storied elements—juxtaposing past and present, these works offer a terrain where decay births creation, the representational merges with the abstract, and symbolism portrays themes of courage, transformation, inner child longings, and communal strength. The show is a contemplation on the intricacies of the some of the narratives that shape the human experience into a mosaic of profound beauty, profound sorrow, and everything in between.

Here are selected collages from that series, which led me to fall even more in love with the poetics collage + the possibilities of the materials I have access to. It was a profoundly impactful practice for me + my work.

“Collage is more than just an art style. Collage is all about bringing different elements together. Once you form a sensibility about connection, how different elements relate to each other, you deepen your understanding of yourself and others.”

A glimpse of work, quick collages studies, works in progress + a couple of “just need to sit with the questions, think this through + get this out for me” on my studio wall.
This month marks 12 years of making Houston my home.
And after 12 year I finally made it to The James Turrell’s Skyscape at Rice University to watch day flow into night.✨
It was magical.
It was a perfect ending to what was a gift of a weekend.
Grateful for it
