Amazing!
Errett Lobban Cord, known as E.L. Cord, was an American entrepreneur who made a significant impact on the automotive industry during the early 20th century. One of his most notable achievements was his rescue of the Auburn Automobile Company in the mid-1920s, which ultimately led to the creation of one of the most iconic American cars of all time: the Cord 810.
Born in 1894 in Warrensburg, Missouri, Cord worked as a mechanic from the age of 14 and rose to the position of sales manager for the Moon Motor Car Company by the time he was 21. In 1924, Cord became the president of the Auburn Automobile Company, which was struggling to compete with larger, more established automobile manufacturers.
At the time, the Auburn Automobile Company was producing relatively conventional cars that were failing to capture the public's imagination. Cord realized that in order to save the company, he would need to take a bold new approach. He set out to create a car that was unlike anything else on the market, a car that would be both beautiful and technologically advanced.
Cord assembled a team of talented designers and engineers, including Gordon Buehrig, who would later design the Cord 810. Together, they set to work on creating a car that would push the boundaries of automotive design.
The result was the Cord L-29, which was introduced in 1929. The L-29 was the first production car to feature front-wheel drive, which allowed for a lower, sleeker design. It was also one of the first cars to feature an independent suspension, which provided a smoother ride and better handling.
Although the L-29 was a critical success, it was introduced just before the stock market crash of 1929 and the subsequent Great Depression. Sales of the L-29 were not enough to keep the Auburn Automobile Company afloat, and Cord knew that he needed to take even more drastic action.
In 1936, Cord introduced the Cord 810, which was an even more radical departure from traditional automotive design than the L-29. The Cord 810 featured a long hood, a sleek, aerodynamic body, and a distinctive "coffin nose" grille. It was also one of the first cars to feature hidden headlights, which gave it a distinctive, futuristic look.
Despite its avant-garde design, the Cord 810 was a commercial success. It was hailed as one of the most beautiful cars ever created, and it set a new standard for automotive design that would influence carmakers for decades to come.
Cord's success with the Auburn Automobile Company extended beyond the Cord 810. He also oversaw the creation of the Duesenberg Model J, which was one of the most luxurious and powerful cars of its time.
Unfortunately, Cord's success was short-lived. The Great Depression took its toll on the automobile industry, and in 1937, he was forced to sell the Auburn Automobile Company. Despite this setback, Cord's legacy lives on in the cars that he created, which remain some of the most iconic and beloved automobiles in history.
Cord's impact on the automotive industry was significant, and his rescue of the Auburn Automobile Company remains one of the great success stories of American business. The Cord 810, with its groundbreaking design and engineering, stands as a testament to Cord's vision and innovation, and his legacy continues to inspire and influence the automotive world to this day.
E.L. Cord's contributions to the automotive industry were so significant that he was even recognized by Time magazine. In 1930, he was featured on the cover of the magazine, which declared him "Master of Speed, Lord of Locomotion." Cord's innovative designs and bold business strategies had earned him a reputation as one of the most influential figures in the automotive world, and his impact on the industry would continue to be felt for decades to come. Let's keep honoring the legacy of this great American entrepreneur and innovator!
The L Cord, also known as the Cord L-29, was a revolutionary automobile that changed the course of automotive history. Produced by the Cord Automobile Company from 1929 to 1932, the L Cord was the first American car to feature front-wheel drive, a groundbreaking innovation that would go on to influence car design for decades to come.
Prior to the L Cord, most American cars used rear-wheel drive, which limited their performance and handling. The front-wheel drive system of the L Cord allowed for better traction, stability, and maneuverability, as well as increased interior space for passengers and luggage.
The L Cord was also known for its sleek and modern design, featuring an aerodynamic body style that was unlike anything else on the road at the time. The car's long hood and low profile gave it a sense of speed and power, while its rounded edges and flowing lines added a touch of elegance and sophistication.
Under the hood, the L Cord was equipped with a powerful 4.9-liter straight-eight engine that could produce up to 125 horsepower. This gave the car an impressive top speed of around 80 miles per hour, making it one of the fastest cars of its time.
Despite its innovative design and impressive performance, the L Cord was only in production for a few short years. The Great Depression hit the automotive industry hard, and the Cord Automobile Company was forced to declare bankruptcy in 1937.
Today, the L Cord is a highly sought-after collectible car, with only a few hundred models still in existence. Its innovative front-wheel drive system and sleek design continue to inspire automotive designers and enthusiasts alike, making it an enduring icon of American automotive history.
If you're lucky enough to come across an L Cord, take a moment to appreciate the car's revolutionary design and engineering. And if you're in the market for a vintage car, consider adding an L Cord to your collection â it's sure to turn heads and start conversations wherever you go.

Hey there, vintage car fans! Today, I want to talk about the iconic logos used by the Cord Automobile Company.
The Cord emblem is a striking design featuring a stylized letter "C" in chrome against a black background. It represents the company's commitment to innovation and modernity.
Another well-known Cord logo is the "coffin-nose" emblem used on the 810/812 models. This logo features a chrome oval with a horizontal bar across the center, giving the car a distinctive front end that resembles a coffin.
Both of these logos are instantly recognizable and have become symbols of the Cord brand's unique style and history.
