Changing education paradigms 09/05/2023

I was an ELA teacher for many years and in 2013 left the public school system. At the time I was in an M.Ed program at Umass Boston, on a 'classroom' track. Late winter/early spring of that year, I realized it would be my last in the classroom. My career in education was taking my on another path.

One of the factors that pushed me to take that hell of a leap?

I discovered that UMB offered an M.Ed in Learning, Teaching & Educational Transformation. It was a 'choose your own adventure' degree program. I would have the opportunity to forge my own path and focus on what felt incredibly salient at the time...but wasn't really at the forefront of education at that point ten years ago. So, I changed my major, changed my path, changed my trajectory and subsequently changed my future.

My thesis was centered around the intersectionality of high stakes testing/teaching to the test AND exposure to and use of smart technology from a young age. From there I was interested in data/outcomes related to child and adolescent cognitive development as well as critical and creative thinking skills.

How does all of the above impact different student populations and subgroups?
How does all of the above impact a child's emotional/social development?
How does all of the above impact finding a pathway to a fulfilling career and post-secondary journey?
How does all of the above impact development of critical and creative thinking?

(I decided to tack on a graduate certificate in Critical & Creative Thinking bc I was so enthralled in the CCT courses...I truly love being a nerd)

During the first semester of my LTET track, I discovered Sir. Ken Robinson. And I am absolutely a better educator for it.

This TED talk of his? The serendipitous timing with which I discovered this clip absolutely was the turning point that helped me begin to distill what I would focus on in my thesis.

It is 11 minutes and 41 seconds and I still watch every few months or so. (I seriously do.)

If you have school age kids? Watch this.
If you ever felt frustrated that your intelligence wasn't accurately reflected on your report card? Watch this.
Were you a student who felt like a square peg in a round hole? Watch this.

Essentially, just watch this.

Changing education paradigms In this talk from RSA Animate, Sir Ken Robinson lays out the link between 3 troubling trends: rising drop-out rates, schools' dwindling stake in the arts, and ADHD. An important, timely talk for parents and teachers.

Facts. Far too may students (and adults who used to be students) feel exactly this way.

Critical Thinking Skills Not Emphasized By Most Middle School Teachers 07/16/2023

"While the numbers themselves are cause for concern, the age range at which these statistics are being reported is equally concerning. Research shows that while critical thinking skills can be learned at any stage of life, the teen years are an opportune time to engage young people as their brains are developing strong cognitive abilities."

Critical Thinking Skills Not Emphasized By Most Middle School Teachers A national survey shows that, by eighth grade, a majority of teachers have stopped emphasizing important critical thinking skills in class.

I had the incredible opportunity to bring a group of young women to the Boston Society for Architecture for an amazing afternoon hands-on learning and critical & creative thinking to solve real world urban planning challenges.

Sparking passion inside the classroom is absolutely important. BUT equally as important are finding opportunities to discover and spark OUTSIDE of the classroom...which I talk about in the video.

Summer is the perfect time to help your student find their spark and ignite their passion!

4-7-8 Breathing Exercise by GoZen 06/27/2023

Y'all! ... mindfulness and meditation are game changers. For kids *and* grown-ups.

This lil gem from GoZen: Anxiety Relief for Children was introduced to be by an amazing coworker and an even better counselor. I have subsequently passed it along to entire classrooms, individual students, people I strike up conversation with at the deli counter or other spot I find myself doing errands. (... if you don't yet know me: I don't force chit-chat, but I do love it.)

It is a FANTASTIC, EFFECTIVE, EASY & QUICK tool to have in the toolbox and one I use myself. After you follow along with the video a few times, you can do it anywhere anytime when you need to 'take a beat'!

...so how did I land on the name 'Marlo's Hollow Learning'? Great Question!

Marlo (pictured with me in 2020) is the namesake of this company, and she has been a part of our family for all of her 13 years. Marlo is an Australian Shepard mix, was born in Mississippi and truly is the apple of my eye. Marlo has been an unwavering support and companion from the moment I began to cultivate my path in the educational field away from the classroom. Always there with a smile and a sloppy kiss to keep me motivated, and keep me going, no matter what the day brings. I knew whatever I called my business, Marlo would have a place.

'Hollow', I suppose, is less obvious a choice. From my point of view, 'hollow' implies a space to be filled, a goal to be met.

✨Possibility.
✨Purpose.
✨Potential.

Another definition? 'Small sheltered valley', which suggests a safe space to thrive. That's how I want my clients to feel as they meet their academic, executive function, organizational and/or post-secondary goals.

A safe and supportive place to 'lean in'. To try new academic and organizational strategies, to explore interests, to be vulnerable yet rooted...to fully realize individual value and academic ability.
