In this final spotlight for #BlackStudentSuccessWeek, we're featuring Dr. Joel Powell as a faculty model for success! Dr. Powell is a Professor of Political Science & Law at GWC. He holds a bachelor's degree in Political Science from UC Davis, and a Juris Doctorate from Kennedy School of Law. Dr. Powell has an extensive background stretching from innovative work in the ranks of academia to work in the private sector as a legal professional. He has worked with public agencies in aviation, transportation and contracting to develop public policy for small, local, woman-owned, and disadvantaged business enterprises. As an administrative leader he has served as both an academic dean and a tenured professor for the largest educational body in California - the California Community College system. He is a certified mediator with the Congress of Neutrals and has served as an Equal Employment Officer (EEO) and assisted in the development and delivery of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion training for the second largest college district in California. Dr. Powell is the President of the Western Region Council on Black American Affairs (WRCBAA), works closely with elected officials and has provided presentations to the California Department of Finance (CDOF), been a keynote speaker for the Sacramento Black Chamber of Commerce and various other organizations around the state of California. He is a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. and functions as a graduate liaison for the undergraduate Lambda Kappa chapter at UC Davis, and the Kappa Alpha chapter at CSU Northridge. We're three days into #BlackStudentSuccessWeek and today we're spotlighting Trina Bluff as one of our faculty "models for success" ✨ Officer Bluff began teaching in Golden West College's Criminal Justice Training program in October 2023. She has been a member of the Los Angeles Police Department for more than 28 years and during her tenure she has worked a variety of assignments amongst a very diverse community. Officer Bluff is a graduate of the Sherman Block Leadership Institute, the LAPD Leadership program, and the FBI’s Hazardous Devices School. She currently is the Officer-In-Charge of the LAPD Bomb Squad 💣 where she supervises a unit of 24 employees. She holds a master's degree in forensic sciences from Oklahoma State University and is working towards obtaining her doctorate in the same discipline. Officer Bluff is a member of the peer support group within her department, and recently was elected as the 3rd Vice President to the board of the Los Angeles Women’s Police Officers and Associates. She is passionate about the future of law enforcement, and strengthening the bonds between the community and police departments. It's #BlackStudentSuccessWeek and today we're spotlighting Professor Avery Caldwell as one of our faculty "models for success" ✨ Professor Caldwell is the head of the Digital Arts Program at Golden West College, and as a design educator and professional he specializes in experiential graphic design, interactive media and architectural visualization. His work examines placemaking in underserved communities through the intersectionality of two-dimensional visual information and built environments. His projects explore the construction of place and identity though semiotics and the use of Black and African cultural artifacts to connect the African diaspora; to shape better identities of Black populated spaces; and to increase social equity within these communities. Professor Caldwell founded the design firm, From Form 2 Morf (fF2M), where he has produced work for clients such as Sony Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Disney and the Discovery Channel Network. His educational background includes a Bachelors’ Degree in Fine Art and a Master’s Degree in Architecture from UCLA, undergraduate study at Southern California Institute of Architecture, and doctoral studies at Claremont Graduate University. His advice for students? It's #BlackStudentSuccessWeek and Golden West College will be spotlighting our exceptional faculty "models for success" all week long! First up is Monique Henderson, or as we call her "Coach Mo" 🤩 Coach Mo is in her 8th year as a full-time faculty member at GWC. She teaches courses in Kinesiology, Physical Education, and Health, and serves as the head coach for the men’s and women’s cross country and track and field teams. During her tenure at GWC, Henderson has coached more than 20 conference champions including five Orange Empire Conference MVPs and a state champion. Coach Mo completed her undergraduate studies at UCLA and earned a graduate degree in Kinesiology from Fresno Pacific University. She is a USA Track and Field coaching education instructor and holds multiple coaching certifications from the sport’s top associations. Fun fact: as an athlete, Henderson was a member of three Olympic Teams and won two Olympic Gold Medals 🥇🥇 Her high school National Record in the 400m is still standing after 24 years. In college she racked up multiple PAC 12 and NCAA titles and records. She was inducted into the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame in 2017, and currently serves on the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame Voting Committee.
