Avant Garde, Unisex, Fashion Eyewear
A spark, an epiphany, a vision, call it what you will. Vulgati is an idea that started many years ago. The name itself is derived from Italy and means common people. Our founder, Jerry McKinish heard the word being spoken at an Italian restaurant and loved the way it sounded. From that moment, he was inspired to create a mens and women fashion brand.
At the time, Jerry was in the textile business, traveling the world in search of fashion trends. He was a salaried employee, without time or money to launch his own brand. It wasn’t until years had passed and Jerry had the good fortune to be able to finally invest in his brand, Vulgati. But Mr. McKinish knew there had to be something unique about his brand, to be successful. The fashion business is a highly competitive market and there had to be a way to garner attention and interest from a social media savvy clientele.
The moment when that spark hit, Jerry was with his fiancé at a day spa, hot springs, called Glen Ivy, in Southern California. The couple were day drinking champagne and soaking in the sun. It was a fun filled day where relaxation parked inspiration. Jerry said I should start the brand with sunglasses. But what typeof sunglasses could he design that would capture the audience attention? Bubble sunglasses. 3d, bubble shaped sunglasses. A futuristic, avant garden style that had a retro, mod feeling, with a mid century modern, minimalistic twist.
Jerry did not delay. He quickly filed for a patent on his bubble shaped idea and was awarded it! He first started in France, with a French designer and French eyewear manufacturer. After failing several times, spending thousands of dollars and finally being told he can’t make that shape of lens, he was feeling rejected and depressed. When he was ready to drop the entire idea, he came up with a solution. Instead of designing the lenses and frames separately, he would design the lens and frame as an injection molded, one piece.
